From a rotting skiff to a round-Britain Rustler, Will Brocklebank explains his plan for a tour of the UK’s rock lighthouses
Boating has always been my happy place – it’s the combination of adventure, B freedom, responsibility and speed that has enthralled me. I say ‘responsibility’ because I learned those lessons early on. When I was in my teens, I worked afternoons in a boatyard in the British Virgin Islands. I scraped together enough money to buy an old 50hp Yamaha outboard from a chap who’d left it rotting on a fishing skiff on the beach. I also found a beaten up 18ft dinghy in the mangroves and none of the locals could ever recall it moving so I adopted it, painted it up and paired the two. The effect was thrilling, the speed was terrifying. And then an enthusiastic outing saw the transom begin to fail from the torque and I limped back to the mangrove mooring. It promptly sank as I glided the last 100m home. Ownership and maintenance lesson learned.
