AFOQT (Air Force Officer Qualifying Test) Introduction
Welcome To The AFOQT
If you are reading this, you are probably on the verge of one of the most critical points in your military career.
Officer Training School awaits, consisting of nine and a half weeks that will unlock one of the best careers you could dream of.
From the earliest days of in-processing during Phase 1, to the moment you graduate from Phase 4, it’s all so close. Not to mention a whole career filled with personal growth, prestige, and the ability to serve the United States of America in one of the most respected roles on the planet.
Right now, there’s just one thing standing in your way. The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test, known as the AFOQT.
The AFOQT is a grueling five-hour series of 12 separate subtests. It tests everything from your vocabulary to your personality, from your math skills to your ability to read aircraft instruments.
You can take the AFOQT a maximum of twice in your lifetime. Your most recent AFOQT score is the one that stays with you.
The importance of getting your best possible score the first time around cannot be overstated. Why? If you want to retake the AFOQT, you have to wait six months.
A six-month wait can slam the brakes on your life plans. Even worse, the way the AFOQT works is you receive a range of different composite scores depending on how you perform on the subtests.
Retaking the AFOQT in hopes of getting a better score is a risky move. If you end up having a bad day your second time around and fail even one subtest, you’re finished. Your old score is wiped out, and you are barred from ever attempting the AFOQT again.
With that in mind, it’s crucial to give the AFOQT everything you’ve got the first time around. Don’t rush your test date. Give yourself enough time to prepare for everything it will throw at you.
With dedication and drive, you are more than capable of making your dreams come true by scoring highly the first time.
Your destiny really is in your hands. If you want to make it to Officer Training School bad enough with the right career path ahead of you, you can. Put in the hours, study the material, and practice, practice, practice.
You need to ensure that any study materials you use are up-to-date and accurate or else you’ll be lead astray.
Some study guides claim to be tailored to the latest form of the AFOQT, but don’t even feature the correct names for the various subtests!
This study guide is a true reflection of the AFOQT Form T, the test’s current form which has been effective since 2015. It reflects all the changes that were made from the previous version, Form S.
You owe it to yourself to make every effort to succeed. The stakes are too high not to. This isn’t just a regular test for a regular job.
It’s the AFOQT – the first step on your journey toward the best career on Earth.
This study guide will not only prepare you for that test, it will ensure you get there effectively and efficiently. With that, let’s begin.
AFOQT Structure and Format
The AFOQT consists of 12 different subtests. Each is designed to test an aspect of knowledge, skill, or personality that correlates with success in later stages of Air Force training.
Each subtest receives its own chapter in this study guide, along with a full practice test.
Here is an overview of each subtest showing its name, purpose, number of questions, and the time you are allocated for each section.
The AFOQT also features a Self-Description Inventory, which is a personality test consisting of 240 questions. This cannot be studied for, and there is no way to prepare for it. So it won’t be covered in this book. That section of the test is used for the Air Force to better understand you and how you think.
AFOQT – Your Questions Answered
When something matters as much as the AFOQT, it’s natural you’ll have a lot of questions. We’ll answer some of the most common and most important questions here before we begin with study practices.
Do I have to take every subtest of the AFOQT, even if they aren’t all relevant to my chosen career path?
Yes. The AFOQT has to be taken as a whole. That means all subtests. There are no exceptions to this.
How many times can I retake the AFOQT?
You are allowed to take the AFOQT twice under normal circumstances. There is technically a waiver system which allows some people to take it a third time, but this is incredibly rare and almost never happens. In order to clear a waiver and take it a third time, you’d need to have a legitimate excuse for why a third time was required. This could be that there was a death in the family, or some major event that caused you to be under duress when taking the exam. You also have to wait six months between AFOQT tests.
Can I use my best AFOQT score from my two attempts?
No. Your most recent score is the only score that counts. If you take the AFOQT a second time, that score is your permanent score for the rest of your life.
How has the Form T version of the AFOQT changed from the previous Form S?
As a result of feedback from existing officers, the AFOQT made the following changes when switching from Form S to Form T in 2015.
All questions were updated across the entire test to make the exam more difficult and be a better representation of a candidate’s capability.
The Reading Comprehension section was added to assess a candidate’s suitability for the Professional Military Education (PME) aspect of training.
The Situational Judgement section was added to gauge the interpersonal choices a candidate may make and to assess their potential leadership style.
The Instrument Comprehension section was updated with more modern graphics.
The General Science subtest was replaced by a new, more focused subtest called Physical Science.
How long does the AFOQT take from start to finish?
The time given to answer questions in each subtest is shown in the table above. However, this isn’t the total time needed to take the AFOQT. There are short admin periods and also a few breaks. The entire testing schedule is as follows:
Part A:
Pretest Admin Activities – 10 mins
Verbal Analogies – 9 mins
Arithmetic Reasoning – 30 mins
Word Knowledge – 6 mins
Math Knowledge – 23 mins
Reading Comprehension – 39 mins
Break – 10 mins
Situational Judgement – 36 mins
Self-Description Inventory – 46 mins
End of Part A (all of the above subtests) Admin – 15 mins
Total Time for Part A – 3 hours and 44 mins
Part B:
Break – 15 mins
Part B Pretest Admin – 3 mins
Physical Science -11 mins
Table Reading – 9 mins
Instrument Comprehension – 8 mins
Block Counting – 6.5 mins
Aviation Information – 9 mins
End of Test Materials Collection – 2 mins
Total Time for Part B – 1 hour, 3.5 mins
Total Time Needed for Complete AFOQT Test – 4 hours, 47.5 mins
What are the different composite scores given out as AFOQT results, and what do they mean?
Unlike other military tests, the AFOQT does not result in a single score. Instead, the Air Force puts together seven different composite scores.
Here’s a look at the seven different AFOQT composites, the subtests that contribute to them, and other pertinent information.
Pilot. Predicts success in both unmanned and manned flight training. Your Pilot composite from the AFOQT is combined with the separate Test of Basic Aviation Skills (TBAS) test, and any hours of flying experience you have, to give your overall PCSM, or Pilot Candidate Selection Method Score. Your pilot score makes use of the Math Knowledge, Table Reading, Instrument Comprehension, and Aviation Information subtests.
CSO (Combat Systems Officer). This composite used to be called Navigator-Technical. If you see a reference to Navigator-Technical anywhere, you know the information is out of date. The CSO mixes in a lot of the subtests from the Pilot composite with verbal and spatial results as well. The subtests that result in your CSO composite score are Word Knowledge, Math Knowledge, Table Reading, and Block Counting.
Air Battle Manager (ABM). Your ABM composite score is based on the Verbal Analogies, Math Knowledge, Table Reading, Instrument Comprehension, Block Counting, and Aviation Information subtests.
Academic Aptitude. This composite
