The Complete SIFT Study Guide - Michael Clark
CHAPTER 1
Simple Drawings
The Purpose
US Army aircraft are some of the most rapid products of engineering the Earth has ever witnessed. Apache Attack helicopters are capable of top speeds in excess of 220 MPH. Airplanes, like the Dash 400, exceed 400 MPH. What does this mean for you as a potential pilot? The Army is looking to test how well you handle rapid visual changes, and they use Simple Drawings to assess this.
The Contents
Simple Drawings consists of 100 questions that must be answered within 120 seconds. This punishing timescale means there is no time to stop and think. Just rapidly answer as many questions as possible.
Many newcomers to the SIFT are fooled by the seeming simplicity of Simple Drawings and overlook it during preparation. Don’t make this mistake. When you see the practice test, don’t think I can easily tell the difference between these shapes,
. That’s not the point. The point is to rapidly process visual information under pressured conditions.
Each question consists of five similar images flashing up on screen in a row, labelled A to E. You will be required to click on one image that is subtly different from the others. For example, you may see a series of five circles. Four circles are plain; one circle is shaded. You need to identify and click on the shaded circle within the time allotted.
Preparation
Preparation for Simple Drawings is simpler than for the other SIFT test sections. You don’t need to memorize complex theories or work through any mathematical processes. Instead, you need to train your brain to become accustomed to rapidly processing and selecting visual information.
Repeatedly running through the practice test section of this chapter, under timed conditions, is a good starting point. Do this again and again until you are able to consistently score upwards of 70% within two minutes. Higher scores are better – but consistently hitting or exceeding 70% is the absolute minimum level of ability you need to have before walking into the test center.
Other than focusing on speed, a simple but powerful technique is to see each question as a single image, rather than trying to look at each answer separately. Your brain is able to rapidly process visual data in this way. It is a technique similar to speed reading. People with high scores on the SIFT reported this technique made a significant difference for them. Try it out for yourself.
There are two main mistakes to avoid during Simple Drawings. Some people have complained about getting ‘stuck’ on a question and attempting to look at it for too long. This type of visual brain freeze is rare, but possible. If it happens to you, just click any answer and move on. The other common mistake is attempting to use some kind of ‘pattern’ or predictiction as to the next question. The computerized test makes this kind of guessing impossible, so don’t waste time trying.

CHAPTER 2
Hidden Figures
The Purpose
As an Army Pilot, you will often be required to fly in difficult conditions. Imagine having to drop cargo or troops into snowy mountains or dense jungle. The ability to pick out hidden visual information is absolutely crucial for a future aviator. Hidden Figures attempts to assess your aptitude for this skill at a basic level. You will be tested through simple illustrations rather than photographic or video data.
The Contents
Hidden Figures is another timed section of the SIFT. You will have 5 minutes to answer 50 questions. This allows you 6 seconds per question.
At the start of Hidden Figures, you will see a series of five images at the top of the screen, labelled A, B, C, D and E. These remain consistent throughout the entire section. You don’t have to worry about new figures for each question. The exact images presented to you will be the ones ‘hidden.’ There are no rotations, inversions or other ‘trick’ variations.
Each question consists of image A, B, C, D or E hidden behind a series of lines and patterns. You are required to identify which image is ‘hidden’ each time.
Preparation
Unlike Simple Drawings, Hidden Figures should not be completed on autopilot. You should aim to strike a balance between answering accurately and respecting your time limit of six seconds per question.
The best approach is to consciously seek out the image for the first four seconds or so. If the last two seconds come around, and you still haven’t found the image, take a guess and move on.
There are two main techniques people reported as useful for seeking out Hidden Images. First, a lot of people have had success by looking at image A in their list of choices, rapidly down at the question, back to image B, and then rapidly down at the question, and repeating this until the Hidden Image is seen. This up and down eye movement causes the hidden figure to ‘pop out’ for some people. Make sure to give this a try during your practice and see if it works for you.
Second, some people find relaxing their eyes and allowing the picture to ‘blur’ useful in making the Hidden Image apparent. This is another method to try out during your practice.
There are two main objectives when preparing for Hidden Images. First, to become familiar with the process of undergoing this type of challenge, so it isn’t a shock on test day. Second, you want to find the ‘image identification technique’ that works best for you. This could be rapid glancing, blurring – or something else entirely.
You’ll probably come across the most effective technique naturally, but if you’re confused, try this process: Take a practice test using only one technique, then take a second practice test using another. Compare your scores. Do this consistently, and, over time, you might discover that one technique is working better for you than the other. Once you find the right technique, stick with it. Practice it repeatedly. This will serve you well on test
