About this ebook
A god fell from the sky once around these parts; he was worshipped until the invaders came. Now every so often he returns and stalks the empty street of this city. This city, known for its love of performing arts, knows better than to stay out late at night. They know to keep their problems to themselves, not like any other deity could save them. The inhabitants are so tight-lipped, that those who move to the city, such as Yana Wemba, have no idea the true terror that roams the night hours. Like many before her, she will just have to figure it out for herself.

Chapter One
Somewhere out in the world, there is a city. It is an old, tired place and wears a worn frown behind a gilded mask of laughter. The people of this city love this place, they truly do, when the monster is not out. Off to the west of this city, there are woods, a few hundred years old. In the woods, dusk is settling in onto the campgrounds between the trees. These woods hide some old, heartless secret deeper in, pass the disheveled tents and hissing embers. The ruins, a temple to some ancient god, sit in a crater clearing. It is an old, bitter reminder of how things could have been.
Somewhere out in the woods, runs a girl. She is running for her life. This girl is lost and alone. And, as one might guess, she will not be making it out alive. This girl, a small, fragile thing, is being stalked by a beast. She is fussing her way through the brush, saying every cuss words she ever swore not to say. Her mother is dead, her father is dead, her brother is dead; there is no one to scold her anymore.
The beast lingers nearby, thinking, "I killed her kin with her looking on in fright. Pierced them on the rods from their tents. Left them exposed like feed fellows, deciding to give hunt on the girl. She is quick, well shocked, running on thin lungs, she will rest soon. But, I will not hold out for soon. I will enfold her, gorge myself."
The girl is struggling her way into a clearing. She is certain that the noise of traffic is just on the other side. The child charges forward, she is hopeful. As she closes in on her escape, the reality of her demise stands firm before her. She charges forward into an invisible wall. This confuses and frightens her. The noises of the woods seem to enclose her and she turns to face them, her back pressing against the invisible wall.
Working its way out of the treeline, approaches a young animal, something local to the area, though the child can not grasp what she is seeing. It is chalk white with the glow of the tired sun running across its fur. It has nine horns that seem to traverse its body, not sure about where to stop. It is a long thing, tall too, with three too many legs. The girl thinks she should be looking at something more normal. It comes to stand close, as though to comfort the child. It nuzzles into her shoulders, her tears stopping. Maybe this unusual beast is some guardian spirit. The girl should not be relaxing, though it is not like she has anywhere to run to now. As one might recall, she will not be making it out alive.
The moment she turns her head, to get a good look at the beast, the child finds herself frozen in fear. The animal's eyes were not like that of any beast she had ever seen but more like that of her own kind. It seems too familiar, uncanny, staring at her in a way her father would stare at dinner after a long workday with no lunch. Before she can withdraw from the monster, it has already driven its fangs into her shoulder. The beast lifts her writhing body and rams it into the invisible wall, her spine is surely broken. It drops her then, only to begin trampling her to death. As was decided, she has not made it out alive.
The beast, in all its glee, thinking, "I do not need the flesh to live, only the soul. These deeds done for sport only."
The beast ceases its merrymaking. It stands among the innards, lifting its head to the sky, mouth agape. As it lets out a gurgling howl, the life of the girl is summoned forth; her soul appearing in the maw of the monster. It carries her soul to the edge of the woods. There is a highway, a busy one at that. If only she could have made it, surely someone would have saved her.
The beast looks out, the distant city stands cowering, But sport will only give security to this city for so long...
As the beast turns to enter deeper into the woods, back into the ruins, it bites down hard on the girl's soul, shattering it between its teeth. As it swallows the shards, it moves at its own leisure, lounging its way through between the trees. By the time it has climbed to the top of the ruins, the moon begins peeking out from atop the trees. The beast sits there, gazing hungrily at the city.
It summons the souls of the rest of the family, they swirl in agony unable to escape the gravity of the monster, "This city never stops growing, does it?" the beast catches one of the souls in its mouth.
"It is monstrous in its own right. How it provokes me with its silence, some monster I intend to consume. You rile the worse in me, city. Let me not forget my time worshipped."
The monster on the ruins' top bites down on the soul, crunching the pieces down until they are small enough to swallow, "In time, you will know the boil in me. But only when I decide it so. Until
