Chapter 1: Separation Fit
Two men sat across from each other in an old, worn-out cabin surrounded by a thick, unruly forest. The older man was bald, grey-eyed and frustrated as his brown robe rustled as he rose. The younger of the two ran his hand through his black hair, not sure what more to say, his purple eyes fell onto the older man. He, too then, decided to stand, his silver robe flowing behind him.
Tonis, how dare you. Do you have any idea what kind of outcome this could have?
the older man looked at him.
Oead, nothing would have come of this if you stopped making such a big deal out of everything. We wouldn't be in this position. We don't have to do this,
Tonis couldn't understand why Oead was being so stubborn. There was absolutely nothing wrong with change.
You're threatening our traditions, our beliefs, Tonis. You haven't a clue on the implications of your actions, you foolish child.
Listen here, you nugget-headed old geezer, It's still a biscuit. We did nothing but change the shape.
No, Tonis. Again, it's the implications of your actions. There was nothing wrong with the old ways of doing anything. Yet, here you are changing everything and not always for the better. Your little toys, your inventions as you like to call them, have scared the elderly and set fire to more buildings than I'd like to count. I have to put my foot down, Tonis. I'm tired of talking to you again and again about this nonsense. But, you're too thickheaded to listen to reason.
Thickheaded? Thickheaded!
Tonis gripped the edge of the table, trying to hold back his bubbling rage. Oead always had a way of riling him up, like it was some kind of sport.
Hotheaded too,
Oead folded his arms, disapproving of Tonis's response. Tonis, I'm giving you one final chance.
I don't want your final chance. You and your precious old ways can shove it. We're done. My group has already come to an agreement. If I couldn't get us to see eye to eye, then we would break bonds with you all today.
Tonis, do you have any idea what you're saying, breaking bonds with your own kind. That's against the preaching of the Goddess. This is heresy!
what was left of Oead's calm, outer demeanor crumbled. This will lead to upheaval and war!
Well, I guess, I'll see you on the battlefield, Oead,
Tonis turned for the door. He had done it; he tore his people in two. He had started a war.
Oead stood a moment in shock, You're not serious. Think this through, Tonis.
I said, I'll see you on the battlefield,
Tonis exited the cabin.
It was a long trek back, even on horse, before Tonis saw his group's stronghold in the depth of the forest. Things had been bad for a few years and had been escalating in the last few months now. And, no matter how hard Tonis tried, he just couldn't get the old-way thinkers to embrace change. They would block his advancements at every turn, even destroying his projects and scoffing at him for calling himself a scientist of the new world.
The old-way thinkers shunned the outside world. They would trade for basic supplies and no more. All Tonis knew of the lands beyond his were from the stories of traveling merchants and the books they would give him. Why couldn't his people embrace the unknown? Why were they so afraid of what greatness they could become?
Tonis,
a voice brought him back from his thoughts. It was his red-haired fiancee, Tashiya.
He hadn't noticed he had finally made it within the stronghold walls. He got off his horse and approached her. With the late evening sky reflecting in her violet eyes, he wrapped his arms around her, shaking. She put up with so much because of him. Would she put up with one more decision he had foolishly made in his rage?
It didn't go too well, did it?
she felt his arms loosen. When he pulled back he was on the verge of tears. Tonis?
I'm sorry, Tashiya. I warned everyone today could very well be the day,
Tonis held himself back from crying, he had to be strong.
So, we're on our own, then?
Tashiya placed her hands on his shoulders, to try and comfort him.
Oead, he called it heresy. That it will lead to war. Tashi, I wasn't trying to start a war, but I just got so angry and fed up with everything. They're always looking down on me and I just- I shouldn't have said- Tashi, love, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry,
Tonis had lost his composure, sobbing in Tashiya's arms.
It's alright, Tonis. We knew the chances were high we'd end up in this kind of situation and, at least, have to stand our ground. We've already decided on ranks and area divisions. We'll beat this. Now, let's get you to bed. You've had a long day. I'll talk to the leader ranks tonight.
By the time Tashiya help Tonis to bed, it had gotten dark but, she decided to have the meeting anyway. Tashiya found herself sitting on the edge of the stage in the auditorium. More people came than what she had called. She looked over the group before her, mostly old friends who must have told other old friends about the meeting. She would have to talk to them about keeping things to themselves. But, seeing how this was an announcement that everyone would know of by noon tomorrow, she would let that go for the time.
I'm sure most of you have a sinking suspicion as to why you're here,
Tashiya pulled herself off the stage to stand before them, she put on a brave face. As you all know, Tonis went to talk with Oead. Things did not end well. As of this moment, the rank titles you were given come into effect.
The room was silent. There was a collective shock. This was finally happening. They were going to war. Someone finally stood up.
"Did he even try to prevent this? We all know how Tonis gets," it was Conisasent.
Conisasent was the most outspoken when it came to Tonis's inability to hold back his temper. Others brought up the problem as well, but Conisasent made sure it was never forgotten. He was a teal-haired, orange-eyed, tall, muscular guy who did like the idea of change. He just didn't like how Tonis
