    Foreword

I want you to know Justin Roethlingshoefer as I know him — someone who gives all of himself when he is helping you succeed.

First, let me tell you about the success I have had working with Justin and what he has done for me in my NHL career. I had been in the league for a while, and as you become older, it becomes harder to prepare physically for the grind of working out, practices, and games. When I first started working with Justin, he prepared me for an upcoming season better than I ever had previously. He addressed all the pillars necessary in order to get me ready physically and emotionally for the season. When I enter training camp now, I don’t worry anymore about the testing the team does for speed, strength, endurance, etc. I feel I am at my peak to compete with other veterans and the youngsters coming into the NHL.

Justin taught me that to be ready for a season I needed to look at my preparation in a holistic way. Not only did we do all the physical training to get prepared, but he worked on my sleep habits, nutrition, mental focus, and emotional stability.

I have to admit, when Justin first created my program and put me through the paces, I thought he was a little over the top. He taught me about mindfulness and other things to get me in touch with my body that I initially thought were a little out there. I found myself taking yoga and receiving massage and cupping treatments. I learned more about my fluid intake and nutrition better than any college course could teach me. If it weren’t for Justin, I wouldn’t have known all of that or how important it was for me to take it seriously.

Where Justin really came through for me was this past year when my personal issues hit a pinnacle. Justin was there to help me through my struggles and to get me ready to return to the NHL. Knowing that he had been through serious and challenging experiences made the trust between us stronger, and more relatable. Justin has a clear direction and purpose with what he does, and he aligns every action accordingly.

When he explained to me what he was embarking upon with Own It, I was so excited for other people to benefit from Justin’s passion to help people. I believe Justin can do anything he sets his mind to accomplish. He does his research and due diligence. He is a great people person but also organized enough to make sure every detail is taken care of so those he works with know they have his full attention.

I really cannot stress my last point enough. He really cares about people. I have seen this with others and experienced it myself. I was able to reach the pinnacle of my profession in hockey by playing in the National Hockey League. I am sure this is true for other sports too, but you go through many different levels until you max out to the level your talent and heart take you. Unfortunately, many coaches and trainers stop looking at you as a person. You become a commodity to some of them. You are there to win games and you can be replaced. That’s the business side of sports. The aim is to win. If you aren’t helping coaches and management win, they will replace you with someone who they think will.

I’m fine with that — it’s the name of the game. With Justin, however, I ran into one of the exceptions. He regarded you as a person. I know when he trained me in the gym or on the ice; he was working with Bobby Ryan the person, not Bobby Ryan the hockey player. There is a difference! It wasn’t only with me. I saw when he worked with other players in the league and even some of his executives and celebrities (we run in similar circles) that Justin listened to them, just as he did for me. That doesn’t happen often, but with Justin it does. I really saw it as he addressed some issues that I had that didn’t revolve around the gym or the ice. As I said, he took a holistic approach to all aspects of my health. He helped me realize I needed to work on other parts of my life so I could be at my peak physically and emotionally.

As you can imagine, hockey players, as with players in all sports, are a close-knit bunch. I heard from others that Justin was like this with all players he worked with. When I missed time this fall with my personal issues, guess who was there — Justin. He was there helping me along and encouraging me. He listened. He was a calming advocate who laid out an honest plan. People often talk about having your back. It is rare to find that quality in a person who means it, but I did in Justin.

I know it is easy to use sports analogies to describe life. After all, in sports you are trying to make the best use of your abilities to achieve a goal. I don’t care if you are talking about your professional or your personal life or both. However, it is the rare athlete that can hit the field, ice, track, or golf course and naturally perform at the top of their profession. Tiger Woods has a coach, Katie Ledecky has a coach, Aaron Rodgers has a coach, Usain Bolt had a coach, and the list goes on. Which makes me wonder — why don’t we all have coaches for life? I admire Justin for using his ability to help athletes reach High Performance Living and he is now bringing those skills to everyday high performers who want to feel that fulfillment in all they do, and defy the roadblocks that seem to hold them back.

What I love about Justin’s process is that you have to ask yourself some serious questions and find out what makes you tick. I know in hockey we are always going, going, going. Rarely do we get a chance to take a time out and think about what motivates us and what we really want in life. Talking with friends, family, and people in other professions, I think this is true for most of us. I found that the more I came to understand who I am and my values, the better I was able to motivate myself to achieve whatever goals I have in my training and hockey. Also, I found once I started to apply that approach to more of my life and not only my profession, I experienced success in that too.

I know Justin’s approach will be something that catches on with many people. He helped me to realize what I needed to live a happy, fulfilled life that transcended the hockey rink. He wants to do that for everyone no matter what you do for a living. Justin will help you achieve that fulfillment you are seeking, desire, and deserve. After all, you are a high performer.

One of Justin’s skills is assessing the strengths and weaknesses of an individual. He can then show you how to capitalize on your strengths and make them even stronger, while you are working on your weaknesses. I initially thought I had someone to work on my body and fitness. In the end, I found there were other pillars of my life, and as we corrected them, the fitness came exponentially faster. Justin knows how to push the right buttons and help you earn everything that is waiting for you!

Embrace what Justin is teaching you. Your life will change for the better. When I applied myself to what he taught, I thrived. I’ve Owned It, now it’s your turn.

    Introduction

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

    Chinese Proverb

Our passions fuel us. In my life, I know they have governed everything I have done so far. I think this is valid for all of us. While passions might direct our careers, relationships and interests, if we do not construct an internal framework to reflect our desires, we run the risk of never realizing that fulfillment in life we are seeking.

Currently, I am following my passion by reaching out and helping as many people as possible. I believe we can all enjoy High Performance Living on a daily basis, but I recognize I have limitations. As much as I would like to talk to and work with everyone, I know that is impossible. However, I do believe that utilizing my background and experience with those I do communicate with, I can assist them in becoming great leaders. Then they can be role models for others who are pursuing High Performance Living too.

The phrase iron sharpens iron has always deeply resonated with me. I have witnessed in the sports world how motivated people can bring out the best in each other. It works with players training together, coaches working
