As Wendy drifted through the orchid gardens and beside the Koi Carp pools at Singapore Airport her mind flowed between a pleasant nothingness; her ageing parents back in England and her longing to fulfil a dream to work abroad stilled for a while to live ‘in the moment’. Preferring the nothingness, that pleasant in between state of no responsibility, she whiled away her wait until her flight. This calmness prepared her for the fraught journey ahead, the midnight arrival at Colombo Airport, Sri Lanka; the relief of seeing her name emblazoned in red letters above the smiling figure of her driver and the bone rattling drive in the jeep to Kegalle Institute. At 42 years of age this was Wendy’s first experience of travelling alone outside Europe and the next few weeks would be
