    Chapter 1 - What’s Next?

Four years is a long time, really. If you don’t think it is then you haven’t been to college. Being head cheerleader takes a toll on you, it was smooth sailing from junior year and onward, mainly because everyone was doing anything they could to get on my good side. I didn’t dwell on it much though, cheerleading just paid for college.

Have you decided what to wear yet? My roommate and best friend asked me.

Nope, I’m still deciding. I answered.

Graduation is in like two days, you should have it all laid out. Sarah decided.

I know, but I just can’t choose. I’ll be looking at the picture for the rest of my life, it has to be good. I’ve been jumping between two different dresses, a short red, silk one and a blue, knee length chiffon dress.

Anything you wear will look good, just look at your body. I work out of course, but I have a normal body for any cheerleader, I think.

Thanks, but you decide for me. Just pick something out for me and I’ll wear it. I smiled at her and went to take a shower; I had just gotten back from the gym.

I honestly couldn’t wait until graduation, high school graduation was just a stepping-stone, and this is the whole nine yards. Although I don’t need college really, I want to be a singer and I’m a pretty good one. I have some demos lined up and some meetings to go to, so it looks good. When I returned, Sarah had picked out the blue dress for me,

    Good choice, huh? She asked.

Yeah, thanks. I could not decide for myself. I got dressed quickly; I was going to the café to meet Josh, my boyfriend and my very best friend.

So you’re going out? She was sprawled out on her bed reading some James Patterson novel for the hundredth time.

    Yeah, with Josh.

Aww, you guys are so cute. You’re moving in together? I looked at her sadly.

Yeah, I did love being your roommate though, and you’ve become my best friend. We’ll always be friends. She smiled brightly at me.

I know, I’m happy for you guys, and I won’t be far. She winked. She’s going to medical school at the university nearby, so her education isn’t quite over yet. I’d be devastated if I had another four years of school and a residency.

So you’ll help me get moved in? I asked her. Josh isn’t the designing or decorating type.

Of course, with Josh doing it you’d live in a mortuary. We both laughed. She is right though, Josh is a computer science nerd, he’s smart, innovative and I love him. People don’t understand why I date him when I could date anyone, even the hottest guy on the campus but I don’t want to. Josh and I clicked when we first met; it was like- fireworks or something crazy like that. He knew me before I even opened my mouth. God, I love him.

True, I’ll see you tonight, okay? We can finish packing. Our dorm room was starting to look more and more empty; it was like the years went away one by one.

Yeah, she was extremely engrossed in her book by now so I just took my leave. Even after all the years I’ve dated Josh, I’m still so excited to see him. I still get butterflies in my stomach just from hearing his voice.

I took the campus bus to the café just on the outskirts of the school. Josh was already sitting at a table outside reading a book; he looked so handsome, as always of course. He has creamy brown hair, it always reminded me of caramel, and his smile is sweet, and inviting. He’s perfect, he’s everything. I came up behind him and covered his eyes, he tilted his head up so I kissed his perfect, soft lips.

I really hope that’s you Breanna. He smiled against my lips. I giggled softly.

    It is, I answered.

I know that giggle anywhere. He always told me I have a nice laugh. I sat down across from him, he smiled at me brightly.

What are you reading now? He always has a new book on his arm.

It’s The Metamorphosis, just a short read. I nodded, he is more intellectual than I am of course but he doesn’t make it evident, and I like it this way anyway."

Sounds...what is it about? I gave up on trying to figure it out.

A man wakes up one day as a beetle. He said simply.

What the hell? I laughed aloud.

I know, it’s really weird. He agreed. I ordered myself a tea with the I-Pads they have at the tables and cheddar soup, my favorite.

Will you ever try something new? He asked me, I order this every time we come here, which is a lot.

No, this is the last time we’ll be here, you know. I said.

True, but we could always come back, a blast to the past kind of thing. I agreed.

Once I got my food, we ate in silence. We do this a lot, just enjoy each other’s company, we don’t have to talk because we know each other so well.

Have you picked your dress out yet? Last I checked you were stuck between the red and blue. He remembered form our late conversation last night, Sarah often times kicks me in the hall when we talk late.

Yeah, Sarah chose one for me. The blue one.

I liked that one, it’s definitely your color. He smirked at me.

Thanks, what about you? You’ve got your suit and valedictorian speech ready? of course he’s number one in our class, he’s a fricken genius. He was published in a bunch of newspapers for creating a cutting-edge computer program that does some complicated thing behind the scenes of the IT world. I try not to try and understand all of his stuff, I just passively listen to what he says.

No, I mean I know what I’m wearing but the speech...it’s a lost hope. He shrugged.

Come on, it can’t be that bad. I tried to reassure him.

No, it is. I know computers, not speeches and public speaking. He’s so cute when he’s insecure, he just doesn’t know how amazing he is. I looked into his bright blue eyes and took his hands in mine.

You can do anything you put your mind to, you’re smart and- amazing. You can write the hell out of any speech. Just pretend your writing a program or something. His eyes lit up like a Christmas tree.

That’s it! Thank you, you always know what to say.

I don’t know what I said, but okay. I laughed.

We finished up our meal and walked around the small town for a while. Hand in hand, we stepped into some small shops and just looked around. I didn’t buy anything though, nothing really caught my eye but it was a bit awkward when we got to a wedding jewelry shop. My eyes lingered on the beautiful rings, it reminded me of when I used to day dream about my future wedding, since I met Josh I always imagined it with him but I don’t know if he feels the same way.

What’s wrong? He sensed my sudden change of emotion. I stopped and looked at one ring in particular.

It’s beautiful isn’t it? I pointed to it. He kissed my lips softly.

You’re beautiful, it would look perfect on you. I don’t know what he means by that but I don’t want to think too much about it, I don’t want to ruin the relationship by pushing him on something.

Thanks, let’s get some ice cream. My favorite ice cream shop was just down the corner from here and on the way back to the campus.

    Okay.

I licked on my ice cream cone all the way back, the campus has a dumb rule of no boys in the girls dorms but people still break them, Josh however, does not like breaking rules.

So, I’ll see you tomorrow. He took my face in his hands and kissed me softly at first, but then he took my bottom lip between his and sucked lightly.

That’s new. I said when I broke away. He smiled with the
