About this ebook

The sun was rising, gently pouring into my bedroom.  I stretched out in the sheets, feeling them beneath my fingertips.  They felt better this morning – softer and nicer.

I had met a boy.

It sounded silly but I had.  Not my type either.  There was no way around the fact he was a dork.  A nerd.  Silly and flustered when he spoke to me, trying to make eye contact but failing because I was a cheerleader.  And I loved it.  He was so adorable that I couldn't stand it.  On a whim and three drinks later, I had given him my number in hopes he'd contact me.

Now, with a slight hangover, looking at the tree outside my dorm bedroom (a single from some strings my dad had pulled with college admission), I felt excited.  There had been boys since I started college, sure, but not like how I felt with when I had been talking to Chris.

It was strange because the instant attraction to him wasn't even purely physical.  No, he was quite nerdy, more than any other guy I had been attracted to.  But I had busted in late at the party and interrupted him in a spirited debate with one of my casual friends.  And by interrupted I meant I had bashed into him when I wasn't looking, trying to get my coat off of me.

And now, here I was, hoping he would call me but worried that he would be too nervous.  I glanced at my pile of textbooks.  I didn't mean to think of Chris in stereotypes but he would be the type to hang out at the library, right?  What if I tried to run into him?  With no classes today since it was Saturday, I thought I'd try it out.  If it went poorly, I could pretend I was there to study.

    Meeting the Boy

The sun was rising , gently pouring into my bedroom.

He was so adorable that I couldn’t stand it.  On a whim and three drinks later, I had given him my number in hopes he’d contact me.

Now, with a slight hangover, looking at the tree outside my dorm bedroom (a single from some strings my dad had pulled with college admission), I felt excited.  There had been boys since I started college, sure, but not like how I felt with when I had been talking to Chris.

It was strange because the instant attraction to him wasn’t even purely physical.  No, he was quite nerdy, more than any other guy I had been attracted to.  But I had busted in late at the party and interrupted him in a spirited debate with one of my casual friends.  And by interrupted I meant I had bashed into him when I wasn’t looking, trying to get my coat off of me.

And now, here I was, hoping he would call me but worried that he would be too nervous.  I glanced at my pile of textbooks.  I didn’t mean to think of Chris in stereotypes but he would be the type to hang out at the library, right?  What if I tried to run into him?  With no classes today since it was Saturday, I thought I’d try it out.  If it went poorly, I could pretend I was there to study.

IT TOOK ME LONGER THAN I would have liked to get ready but I was determined if I bumped into him to make a good expression. It was the midst of autumn outside so my brown hair was tied up in a bun with a dark red pea coat covering my white sweater and jeans.  My boots made noise against the pavement as I set off towards the campus library.

I knew I was being silly acting this way over a boy but after months of dating guys who bored me after two dates, I was eager to follow my gut instinct about Chris.  I stepped into the library.  I hadn’t been here in ages, a bit too concerned with partying for my own good.  The silence was comforting and the smell of books was nice too.  It was mostly empty.  Not many people came here on a Saturday.

I took my time walking through, my fingers trailing over the spines of books.  There was a reading area nearby which had someone there, curled up with a book, clearly studying.  Off to one side was a table to work off of.  Someone else was there, their books spilled out over the entire table.  The reading area outside was empty.  I guess it was a bit too chilly to go read or study outside.

I floated over to where the computers were.  There was a row of them and you had to sign up to use them.  But I had no idea how to use a computer.  My last boyfriend said not to bother to use them and that no one was going to bother with them in the future.  But my heart skipped a beat.

Chris was sitting in front of one, his glasses perched on his nose, looking closely at the monitor.  His hair was slightly messy.  He was wearing a button up white shirt but the sleeves were unfolded, spilling out at his wrists.  He had a giant book next to him.  He was adorable.  I should have known he would be at the computers.

I clutched my own textbook close to me and decided I’d accidently nudge into him as I passed by.  Taking a deep breath, I began to walk down the row of computers.  He was clearly focused in his task, not even glancing up at the sound of me walking.

At the last moment, I nudged him.  Harder than I had expected because he almost jumped out of his chair.

I’m sorry! I lied, I should have been paying more attention!  Oh...Chris! Now I feigned surprise at having run into him, I didn’t even notice it was you!

Chris looked surprised and pushed up his glasses, Oh, hey...

My heart dropped.  He had forgotten my name? It’s Charlotte, I said, sticking out my hand for him to shake, We met at the party last night, remember?

Chris shook my hand, Oh, yeah, He looked taken aback, How are you?

I’m good! I tried to beam at him but something felt off.  Maybe I had misread his signs completely?

Chris ran his hands through his hair, That’s great.

Did you have a nice time at the party last night?

He shrugged, It was okay. I normally don’t go to them, to be honest.

I sat down in the chair next to him, plopping my text book in front of the computer, Yeah, I don’t think I had seen you before last night.

Uhm, He looked nervous again, You really shouldn’t be sitting there without signing up for a computer.

I glanced down the row of computers but no one was around, It is okay, I don’t think anyone will care.

This slight rule breaking seemed to make Chris nervous, I uh-

So, I said brightly, Funny running into you, right? I was coming on strong but didn’t care, Especially after I gave you my number last night.

You remember that? Chris blurted out and then shut his mouth as if he said something he didn’t mean to say.

    I blinked, Excuse me?

I...I just...you were drunk so I didn’t think you remembered it.

I had been pretty drunk but not that drunk, No, I remember, I looked at him closely, You thought I didn’t mean it, didn’t you?

    What? He was blushing now.

I pressed on, You thought I gave you my number cause I was drunk, not because I was interested.

His silence and blushing told me yes, that was exactly what he thought.  What he thought of me, apparently, a drunk girl who gave out numbers to nerds and forgot the next morning.

Well, that isn’t me.  Come out with me tomorrow.

    What?

We’ll go grab coffee tomorrow.  Mid-day.  It won’t seem like an official date then since you feel I didn’t officially give you my number, right?

Chris stuttered and then said, Okay.

Great, I stood up now, The place at the edge of campus.  Eleven AM, okay?

    He nodded, Sure, Charlotte...

    See you then.

I spun on my heels and marched away from Chris, determined not to let my embarrassment show.  He may have thought I had given him my number because I was drunk but he was sorely wrong.

I was ten minutes late the next morning to the date.  I hadn’t meant to be but I got wrapped up in trying to finish a paper.  I flew through the front doors of the small coffee shop and saw him instantly in the corner, reading a book, a coffee next to him.

I walked over, sliding into the seat across from him, Sorry I’m late.  I had this paper and was trying to finish it...

He looked up and my heart beat a little faster – he was so handsome, No problem.  Hope you don’t mind I got a drink already.

    No, that’s fine.

He moved his book and I saw another coffee behind it which he slid over to me, If you don’t like it, I can get you something else.

I felt pleased he had bought me a coffee and tried to wipe the stupid smile off my face, No, this is perfect, thanks.

We fell into a comfortable conversation.  Not taken off guard Chris seemed able to relax more with me.  The only way I could tell he was nervous was he fiddled with his glasses a lot but I thought it was adorable.  I was smitten.

How did you end up going to the party anyway?
