Gerald Gorshon stood over the display case, his ringed fingers resting lightly on the glass countertop as he studied the pieces. He knew them by heart, could feel them as if they were in his hands, but he still had to look. Maybe this time it would be there.

Each shelf in the display case carried a different maker’s work. The pieces gleamed in the dull candlelight, their silver gilt edges honed to such fine edges that the pieces had to be placed just so on the black velvet-shrouded shelves so that the blades would not cut the fabric.

It wasn’t there.

In this godforsaken place, why had he ever expected anything different? Dust rose up in swirls around his boots as he shifted his massive weight back and forth. After seventeen hours spent riding the rails to make it to this hellhole, the least the Goddess could have provided was the one thing he sought.
