About this ebook

A perfect life, but with a piece missing

Widowed retiree Selma Lawrence had her routines and her life just as she liked them: knitting baby beanies for her church, reading dark noir mystery novels, and tending her front yard rose garden. With her cat and a full TV line-up, she had everything she needed.

Her routines fly out the window, however, when a wild woman her own age crashes a Corvette into her beloved rose garden and awakens Selma to a completely different world.

A world she never imagined, and one she never realized she needed.

A crazy adventure story that asks the question, "Are you ever too old to follow your dreams?"

    About the Author

    Chapter 1

Selma Lawrence wound another skein of her latest purchase from Sonia’s Yarn Shop—a delightful mottled cerulean blue made from Andean alpacas—around her fingers. Her snow white hair swept down past her cheeks and blocked her view as she bent her head to her work. She had three more baby beanies to make for this week’s church donation, and those beanies weren’t going to knit themselves.

Her knitting needles clacked in rhythm with the cuckoo clock and the ticking of the spines on the roulette wheel as another contestant took their spin before guessing the next consonant. Burbles, her tabby cat, leapt on to the faded floral loveseat beside her and nudged her wrist. Clearly it was dinner time, since Wheel of Fortune was on. Burbles had an impeccable sense of time, as only cats had.

If it weren’t for Burbles, living on her own in retirement would be far more boring.

Goodness, her life was so full with church and knitting and playing minion to Burbles, not to mention her routines: the weekly shopping trips to Tom’s Food and Drug for her fresh fruits and vegetables, Sonia’s Yarn Shop for not just yarn but also conversation with the gals there, and the library for more large print mysteries.

Then there was the daily TV viewing schedule that started with the morning national news programs—Great Day, USA! was her favorite, although she felt it was rude not to check out the other programs on occasion—and then the talk shows, her favorite cooking show on PBS Vive la French Cuisine with Eloise, the afternoon news programs, and then the game shows. In the gaps between shows, she read her favorite private eye/noir mystery novels.

Yes, indeed. Her life was incredibly full.

Even if it felt like something was missing.

What exactly that something was, she couldn’t put a finger on, but then she would fall back into her routine and the momentary puzzlement would go away.

At Burbles’ annoyed meow and violent wrist nudge that knocked her knitting needle out her hand, Selma set aside her project and stroked the cat’s head. "Yes, yes. Let’s get you fed. We can’t keep Pat and Vanna waiting when there
