Wanted: MLS for Private Collection
SHE SAT ON THE EDGE of the hard plastic chair, her back straight, her eyes staring at the conference room table as she waited for the interviewer to arrive. All she knew about the job—just the Craigslist ad for a librarian—she could have written on her hand. That was odd, she thought, to place a librarian job listing on Craigslist, and not in the usual places. But, hell, she had been scouring the usual places for months and turned up nothing. With rent, and now her graduate school loans, due, she needed the money now. She had considered selling her soul for a job, but wasn't sure it was worth that much.
The price tag on the collar scratched her neck, and the new suit's stiffness did nothing to calm her nerves. At least it was something to focus on in the bare room.
Ms. Anderson?
asked a low, gruff voice.
The young woman looked up from the table and tried to restrain her gasp. Yes?
she said.
I'm Bob, head of HR. I'll be interviewing you today.
She stood up to take his proffered gloved hand and shook it tentatively. How do you do?
Just fine, thank you.
He motioned for her to take her seat and sat at the opposite side of the table. His fingers flipped through a thick manila folder and came to rest on her résumé, which she could see from her seat. He tapped it with a finger. It says here that you just graduated with your MLS.
Yes, sir.
