This book is so poorly written that I was unable to make it past the introduction. I skipped around, and the entire book is written at this level. Not everyone needs to try their hand at writing.

‘From the Author’

It was during the early hours on October 2nd, 2017 when I heard the initial reports of a mass shooting in Las Vegas. Stephen Paddock was announced to be responsible for the attack. Another emotional public mass attack with a higher ratio of violent results in casualties. An unimaginable scenario far too horrific to comprehend and a loss for words. Instead, thoughts were with those in attendance, the victims, and their families, but left with that sense of dread. That feeling of disgust there are people in this world who seek out and continue to hurt and kill others to satisfy their own selfish need. Sensationalized news had woven a different number of rumored conspiracies, cover ups, and hoaxes, because of the shrouded silence during the due course of the investigation process, and some people’s speculative imaginations. These actions displayed little consideration to the victims, their families, and friends in the wake of the tragedy. To the point groups of people were shamefully and verbally threatening families of the deceased, the victims who survived and their families, through online social media, and direct attacks posted to their social media personal pages.

The initial phase of this work was to select a person of interest and develop a psychological and behavioral profile assessment for an assignment. The instructor’s feedback on the psychological profile assessment of Stephen Paddock was thorough and thought provoking, making suggestion to further the potentials in a more completed work. Through the courses in completing my master’s degree of psychology, there remained a drive and focus on the research and work that continued to evolve. It had become the first opportunity to apply research skills and academic knowledge I had learned over the years into a published work. To present the material in observed patterns to consistency, interpretations of the case’s legal facts, which could present applied developed conclusions.

The comprehensive examination presents an overall insight of the Las Vegas shooting. Mainly, historical background, psychological paradigms, typology and criminal methodology of the shooter, and systematic analysis of the developed profile of the subject responsible, Stephen Paddock. Detailed information is the interpretation of case patterns, Paddock’s psychological and behavioral patterns into the behavioral traits, stressors, and the actions of the shooter in the timeframe that led up to the attack. Additional facts presented are from interpretation of the investigation, the autopsy and Stephen Paddock’s brain scan analysis results for further examination to relevance, through psychological concepts and internal and external variables related to this case.

Also included are the detailed accounts of the survivors, security guards, civilians, and law enforcement’s and emergency responder’s accounts during the shooting. In addition to the personal accounts that took place from the initial shots fired, that led to the first encounter, approach, breach, and entry into the shooter’s Mandalay Bay suites. Additional accounts examine the investigative process from law enforcement’s point of view and, lastly, the heroic and courageous stories of survivors. The profound accounts of the stories of survival provide hope, revealed true courage of those in attendance of the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival, and those who risked their lives to save others. In conclusion, the work presents a memorial of the names of those lost in the October 1st, 2017 mass shooting.

Through the entire process of this work’s intended focus, this project remains a humble involvement that follows any tragedy. Attempts to grasp how a person can validate the actions to commit a violent act is difficult to conceive. Many of those who search to understand, with an open-minded and broader perspective, will manage to form reliable conclusions or hopefully become provided with the reliable means of explanations. There are those who continue a diligent study, vast research amounts of information on a variety of subjects, in their various professional fields to the point toward discovery and seek to provide answers to some of the questions that remain. However, there comes the likelihood, difficult as it may seem to accept, there are acts of nature for which there are no capacity to understand. Continued research advances through empirical, theoretical, and pure logical means, to discover reliable knowledge and information through valid methods, and achieve the highest legitimate conclusion from facts contained within evidence. The magnitude in the result of the impacts were, and are at times, overwhelming. To present a work of non-fiction, such as this, as compared to the fictional world of writing, is another awakening entirely in the realities of threats faced each day. In addition to the important aspect of how a heightened awareness has become an aspect in the daily routines of many people’s lives, through internal and external situational observations.

Developed personal curiosities, and a need to further understand the human condition that pertained to the Paddock case, as the facts were made available and all the material interpreted, came like a break in the flood gates and rushes of late nights. At times, far too emotional to continue. I only to hope that it translates well enough in the results. Perhaps, to even provide future implications. In the very least, I felt it would be an attempt to challenge and apply what I learned in the psychology program. Apply and adapt those interpretations of personal understandings from the case information and release the final work. If that was even possible to achieve? At least come to some conclusion that was the most likely and consistent to the case interpretation.

Emergence of the perspective within the psychological paradigms of the human condition that pertain to the mind, throughout the process, revealed deeper concerns toward consistent patterns. Examine the personality traits and each of the perpetrator’s behaviors and the personality. Look at the components of his characteristics from his own 2013 narrative, witness interviews, the environmental stimulus’ that shaped or might have become the potential stressors to lead to correlations in violence, and conclusive causation from past traumas. Theorized observational experiences, an approach from different viewpoints, factoral analysis, as difficult as that comes to be starts from the shooter’s perspective. Additional analysis comes with family member’s narratives, other potential people who interacted with the shooter, the first responders, law enforcement, victims, and survivor witness accounts. Mainly, in the evidence and factual reports.

Without regard for their safety and in harm’s way, people at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival risked their lives for others they had never met. Others in attendance were family, spouses, friends, and coworkers. Those who laid it all on the line to protect and serve others in need and whom they cared and loved. Groups had gathered to transport the injured and wounded to the medical tents and those who required medical attention. Many lost their lives in assistance with essential medical treatment to protect those who were wounded and those they loved. Hundreds acted on instinct and saved more lives than had already been lost. Although a portion of the focus of this work is on the shooter, and the investigation, the focus does intend to remain on the courage of the heroes, the accounts of brave survivors, and those lost. Regardless of those who continue to carry out violence upon others, through senseless acts upon those who are defenseless, you and those among the callous and dysfunctional types will find there are those willing to prove you futile. We will always keep a high level of hope, in all of humanity, above all else.

We have only to follow the thread of the hero path, and where we had thought to find an abomination, we shall find a god; where we had thought to travel outward, we shall come to the center of our own existence. And where we had thought to be alone, we shall be with all the world. - Joseph Campbell

I remain far from an achieved literary master and wish not to step into the forefront of being considered an expert in forms of human violence and mass shootings. I am just as much the devoted student and researcher, who remained on the dedicated work path in this explored knowledge and through further development of my craft in the field of writing, psychological paradigms, and criminology. I remain shocked and humbled in tragic events such as these, and for the continued support received from my friends, and you, the readers. The approach to this work was done to the best of my abilities, most likely with marginal error. I am human. Presented to the reader an all accurate focus, with admission in some areas the difficulty to remain unbiased, due to the consideration to abhorrent violence presented. Writing a work of fiction provides a fair amount of comfort because it presents opportunity to develop fantasies and plots. It is a bit harder to fathom the depth of horror that can emerge in life.

This book is the first completed work of non-fiction. A true test and challenge. Reality in the existence through the imagination of the mind and its translation of storytelling is much more than transferrence to paper in nonfiction. The telling of fact with concern crime is a harrowing recognition of facing the darker human conditions and callous intentions that exist within humans. These real-life events carry a much heavier emotional impact. The reality of a disturbed human mind is by far more frightening, in real life, compared to the creation of a story’s fictional character, and creates a new level of fear to any other comparison the fictional writer can compare. Researching and exploring the information in an investigation, with the facts and information made available, present immense and horrific proportions. That is not to deviate from the beauty and love in this world, and the hope and humanity societies manage to show each day.

As the presenter of this novel, its ending message intends to serve there is and will always be courage, human decency, community support, kindness and hope within people and heroes to emerge in all populations around the world. Of course, there will always be the opposite force. Vigilant minds and open hearts remain willing to help and support others who are also searching for examples of hope. Those in dedicated service of others carry on, to protect and shelter others who find themselves in need. A section of this work contains shared accounts through narratives of those who experienced, witnessed and survived the tragedy. Along with the accounts of the heroes who placed their lives on the line to save many by offering medical care and comfort, reassurance. In memory of the victims lost in the tragedy, with heartfelt condolences to their families and friends, for their legacy of bravery, and in memories held, forever, remaining in life.

There is some intensity contained within this release, presented with a high degree of emotion, and involved in subject matters of this proportion. The expectation remains to how those who were directly involved and experienced this tragedy first hand have been forever effected by the events of profound survival and deeply disturbing and tragic loss of life. The overall refelction on this writing experience, for me, was overwhelming. My thoughts are with all those who were lost, injured, and forever changed by this attack. This release is not meant to disturb those who were involved, or those families who lost a loved one, those who remain in grief, loss, and trauma from this event. I only seek and hope there are those who will reflect on its intended purpose. A focus on all the heroes, who risked their lives to save others, and hold close to the loving memories of those lost October 1st, 2017. Vegas Strong.

‘Overview of Modern Mass Shootings’

Mass shooters maintain unpredictability through their selected target locations. Certain targets selected with purpose, while others chosen at random. With a rise in the number of mass shootings over recent decades, these unfortunate tragedies often result in higher fatalities. There are various indicators of the methods used in each attack, likely in an approach selected through entry points, close quarter environments, and in determination of the amount of people at the location. Patterns show the extended duration a shooter has taken to research, prepare, and the time spent in the plans for meticulous attack. There are those attacks carried out that appear to have taken less planning. The initial plan appears to create confusion with extreme chaos. In response, law enforcement and national agencies have managed high level threat identification, response, and control techniques, and have addressed these scenarios with a high vigilance and renewed sense of urgency in the maintained need for public safety. Mass shootings may have increased over recent decades, but the durations of each active shooting have appeared to decrease. A decrease in the duration of each mass shooting appears to be the result of faster notifications to law enforcement, swifter officer response times to on scene arrivals, the shooter’s identification, command and control of the scene, and highly effective abilities to neutralize each situation. Emergency responders are also highly trained and prepared for response times, on scene medical treatment of any injury and for hospital transport. Consistent training of all agencies remains a high focus, is extremely important, and effective in the outcome.

A mass murderer is usually considered to kill several or more victims consecutively and in one location. Their murders are committed in an outburst with no cooling off period. Unspecified stressors are usually revealed, in most cases once premeditation becomes identified through motive. These events carry a considerable variation with consideration to each attacker’s background. When examining a case, all suspect’s behaviors and premeditations will appear different with considerations to correlation and causation, and in the motives that led up to the attack. However, patterns in the evidence should identify and reveal consistencies, a profile. Should the suspect be taken into custody, provide confession or motive, prosecution and sentence.

Upon the current completion of this book release, there were 101 public mass shootings reported in the United States, dated from 1982 to June of 2018, that resulted in four or more victims in death or injury. A mass murderer’s reasons; however irrational and twisted, usually become clear within a day or two, others in longer duration, after the crime has been committed. In correlation with many mass shootings, there might be a suicide note or manifesto left by the killer. Others might leave a series of rants posted to social media. Shooters have made direct phone calls to police or loved ones. Even prior police reports, court cases, and restraining orders can become indicators for reason and motive in case investigation. Witnesses and personal family narratives can reveal the perspective of a shooter’s ideology, direct motives, and provided through interrogation. Investigators speak with family members, friends, business associates, former individuals from past relationships, jaded lovers, and others who might be able to offer any insight into an investigation. Crucial information can is revealed through collected information such as phone records, emails, financial accounts, travel records, and anonymous tips. Any form of rationale can indicate what stressor, or combinations, set off a person to commit the violent act. It also helps to construct the timeline and accounts that occurred leading up to the act itself.

Indications in the former mentioned recent study of mass shooters revealed the results of the 98 shooters to be male. A high contrast to consider only four female mass shooters reported. One mass shooting occurred that involved, both, a male and female pair. In academic research, it suggests there is not enough data available to present studies related to the female versus male phenomenon because of the lower numbers in mass shootings committed by female shooters. The future implication is for opportunity to present the differences for what might suggest males to be more likely in committing a mass shooting rather than females. It can lead to further potentials to offer additional insights in perspectives for male induced violence to mass public attacks. Perhaps, offer future intervention, strategy development, and phases into the minds of current mass shooter’s historical data and analysis for potential correlation and causation.

The data is not enough for a significant study, since only 6 percent of mass shootings, thus far, have involved females. There is a continued focus in the fields of academic research study toward correlations for deviant criminal behavior, criminal pathology, that might lead to direct causation for those who kill. However, there are far too many elements and factors related to violence that indicates many correlations, or combinations of factors, that lead to direct causation not a single indicator for direct causation of violence. I am just not certain that a person is a born criminal or born with inherited violence. Theoretically, perhaps, there are predisposed inherited traits we can be born with, and that can be developed, over time, through learned observation and conditioning. It would still be my belief the conditioned personality and behaviors are introduced, observed, and learned through and by environmental factors in the stages of learning and development.

In San Bruno, California, April 3rd, 2018, Nasim Najafi Aghdam, a 39-year-old female, shot and injured four people with a handgun. She entered YouTube headquarters and opened fire then took her life. At first, she was believed to be involved in a domestic dispute. She also has posted rants about how YouTube discriminated against her through filtering her content. After the father’s interview, he had previously informed police he had not been in contact with his daughter for days. He also indicated a warning to law enforcement with the possibility of his daughter's intention toward YouTube. Inside the mind of a mass shooter, there is more than one single element behind the storm that sets off their violent stressors. Historical constructs of family dynamics with concern to love and care through nurture, versus trauma and neglect that is lacks in a stable environment and is void of nurture. A lengthy historical deviant background can involve drug addiction, alcohol abuse, lack social structures, and discipline. Also, it should be mentioned, in consideration for the person who is raised in neglect or surrounded by an environment of violence, without love or nurture. That person who experiences negativity does have the possibility to turn out different, adjust, and change at any point, with positive results.

When a mass shooter carries out the act of unsuspected violence, many closest to them remain with perspectives to personal thoughts and recollections of their close relationships with the attacker. Memories of their interactions with that loved one or person, before leading up to the attack, become clear between the individual and shared moments once they have time to reflect. Time to reflect can present a very different picture of the issues and problems that had been presented by the person. The issues might be ignored, or well concealed or, perhaps, just became accepted as normal behavior? There is always going to be correlation to the reason for why a person commits a mass shooting, usually which become apparent to investigators over the due course of the investigation. The reasons can be as common to malcontent lovers, race and religious differences, extremist beliefs, someone fired from a job, or copycat killings, money, or relationship issues, in combination to mental health issues.

All common psychological stressors and criminal indicators pertain to the discovery of motive. Through correlation to causality in violent behavioral reactions in retaliatory attacks, other motives might remain undiscovered, and the final insights into determination of motive will remain elusive. The presented difficulty in the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. A complete lack in evidence that failed to link the material with the current information as to what stressors caused Stephen Paddock’s need to target the specific group. What happed during his life to cause him to react with violence of a mass shooting? Internal malfunctions in synapse mechanisms, combined with an emotional response, creating defensive reaction patterns, in correlation to environmental and mental overload? A failure to respond appropriately to each situation and physiological responses initiated the violent results?

A highly studied and researched mass shooting is one that occurred in Austin, Texas, at the University of Texas. Charles Whitman killed 18 people from a tower position in Austin, Texas. A similar tower target position selected by Stephen Paddock during the Mandalay Bay Casino Hotel shooting in Las Vegas. This elevated shooting position was termed by the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit to be a criminal profile trait of the assassin personality, in some mass shootings. The reason being, through similarities of a target position that would be carefully selected by a sniper. The position is discreet, the shooter is hidden from sight, and has a line of sight advantage in target selection, and it takes longer in attempts to identify the shooter from this chosen position.

It was August 1st, 1966, when Charles Whitman shot and killed 16 and injured 30 from a tower at the University of Texas. Earlier that day, he had shot and killed his mother and girlfriend, before he opened fire from the tower. Once his location was discovered in the tower, Whitman was shot and killed by two police officers. This crime had been an initial mass shooting to place a high emphasis on investigation into the mass shooter’s psychological behaviors and patterns leading up to the attack. Specifically, a focus that begun around the time of Whitman’s mass shooting. It drew further attention to develop the mass shooter profile throughout the investigation. With an emphasis on typology, the profile included an in-depth historical background, medical aspects, neuropathology, psychology, and involved a deeper psychological study into the mind of the shooter.

There were limitations to the research and academic studies available to law enforcement and federal agencies that allowed for behavioral investigations before the 1970s. To the point an American nation became alarmed to the degree of this new threat level of public mass attack in 1966. A shift in the landscapes of domestic threats to public safety and increases in other areas of criminal acts. There was soon a new developed approach for how investigators and agencies began to advance the understanding into a criminal mind. Develop a system that might acknowledge criminal deviance and categorized typologies with more detailed methodology and patterns able to reveal signature details within crime scenes. The patterns in crime scenes revealed individual signatures that could become useful for criminal identification. Crimes had potentials to be compared in hypothesized criminal profiled behaviors to other similar crime scene analysis. Evidence in similarities for comparisons how each crime was theorized to have been committed, where the crime took place, potential murder weapon, and what linked a suspect to a specific murder or crime scene’s signature. Of course, there are additional factors to consider and techniques applied in the process of crime scene investigation.

The beginnings of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) at FBI headquarters in Virginia. The department that began to observe and study individual criminal behavior working with local and state law enforcement agencies, district attorneys, had now, most importantly, begun to put together data analysis from the crimes, compile the quantifiable research into specific questionnaires, which could place other crime pattern comparisons and data research studies into taxonomy, quantification, criminal profiles.
