Preface
I have a Dream, and I hope that The Tale of the Seven Dwarfs
will help me make it come true.
I’m speaking to you, adults…
Love the fairy tales, read to your little ones, find the right words to enter in the heart of your kids.
It would be nice if you could continue to talk in the years, to not be afraid to express your feelings, to let people know that, even in adulthood, thanks to Love, we can continue to dream with the eyes of a child, and be young again.
The Seven Dwarfs. Who doesn’t remember their name? It took the fairest lady, with hair as black as ebony and skin white as snow, and an Evil Queen, and a Huntsman, and a Charming Prince on a white horse, to make them famous.
But, at the end of the beautiful fairy tale that is Snow White, it was as if the curtains closed on the seven little heroes and their favourite girl. Where would Snow White be now? With her Prince Charming, no doubt… She is probably having nice, long walks in the gardens, or maybe she is playing, getting lost in the endless rooms and hallways of the castle. Or maybe not, maybe she is too busy looking after her two or three children. Children?! It really has been a long time… Maybe Snow White and her Prince are already grandparents? But even so, with a lot of grandchildren running and playing around them, I still imagine them forever beautiful.
Unfortunately, we don’t know anything for sure, either about Snow White, nor the seven dwarfs. To be fair, we don’t know much about the dwarfs, not even about their life before Snow White. Before finding that pretty and young lady in their tiny cottage, coming back from a day like any other, delving in dark underground labyrinths for gold and precious stones, who were the seven dwarfs?
Well, that’s easy: they were already dwarfs, and already were seven. They already were our Doc, Grumpy, Dopey, Sneezy, Bashful, Happy, and Sleepy. They just weren’t famous yet. But a question, a curiosity a bit intrusive is always there with us, since when we first met them. Why were our dear dwarfs all alone in their cottage, with no company? No ladies, or girlfriends, or wives on their side?
The story I’m about to tell you, dear children, has the answer to this mystery, but it’s above all a magical adventure… Because one thing needs to be clear from the beginning: it’s not true that the dwarfs have never had experiences destined to be imprinted in memory, before the arrive of Snow White. And even after, almost like they were enjoying themselves, Adventure called them, and dragged them, making them protagonists of another incredible story of love and research.
Let’s find it out, together…
Our story begins one night, early in the summer.
It looked like the stars in the sky where shining more than usual, puncturing the black cloak of the night, like a myriad of golden pins. A light breeze was blowing from the mountains nearby and in the air you could feel something special: the good weather was at its best, and it was filling up the joy and expectations of the hearts of all those who were living and were part of that Paradise.
It’s like I can hear you now…
Paradise? Were the seven dwarfs really in Paradise? How come? Did they pass away and fly up above in the Sky?
No, dear children. I didn’t say «part of Paradise», but «of that Paradise». I mean, it was a Paradise, but not the Paradise… Is it clear now? But let’s not get off track, let’s move on with the story…
After Snow White left for the castle with the Prince, everything went back to normal. And even if they missed their friends so much, it is also true that our little dwarfs were a bit creatures of habit, and they were not sad about getting back to their old routine. They couldn’t imagine how little that normality would last.
That night, they were outside their little house, enjoying some fresh breeze. Some were having fun chasing butterflies, others were having a chat. Grumpy was complaining about something and no one was listening, Sleepy was having a light doze on a comfy oak root covered with moss…
Only Dopey was aloof, in a strangely pensive mood. If someone had noticed his expression in that moment, they probably would have worried about him. He was staring at the sky, like he was waiting for something, a sign, with a strange attention, even a bit spooky. Motionless and alert, like a kitten watching butterflies flying around him. Yes, it really looked like he was waiting for something. Or someone.
That behavior was very strange for someone like Dopey. When was he ever anxious? Who would ever expect to see him in apprehension? Playing and joking have always been his only occupations.
But, even if nobody could know it, not even Dopey himself, who was only relying on his instincts, something was about to happen. Something, in that summer night, would have changed his destiny and one of the other dwarfs, forever.
It all happened in a moment. Like if they were driven by something mysterious, every dwarf stopped what they were doing and looked up to the sky. Nature was providing a magnificent show: stars were looking surreal, they looked close, so close. Even Sleepy, with his eyes half-closed, pointed at the stars, like he could touch them. Then his hand fell back on his lap, and he started to snore even harder than before. But the stars in the sky no, they were not sleeping… They were alive, beaming with a twinkling of light, and some, every now and again, cut through the black of the night, leaving behind them a trail of silver.
And did you know, kids? Every shooting star is a wish to make…
It was Dopey, with his eyes lost chasing a shotting star, who suddenly formulated the Question. And from that moment on, nothing would have ever been the same.
«What if I wish I had a tiny Snow White?».
Absolute silence. The other dwarfs turned all at once, incredulous. They looked at Dopey, then they looked one another, speechless.
«Dopey! You... You... SPOKE!». Doc couldn’t believe his own ears. But they all heard it right, there was no doubt: those words had come from the mouth of Dopey, who now looked at them in turn, with a seraphic smile on his face. And almost as if to reassure his friends that they had not dreamed, he spoke again, in a calm, slow and clear tone:
«You see... I had a dream, you know... I was alone in the woods when, thanks to
