Shyeanna traveled for days until she got to the cave where Garille had secluded himself for the last few years.
It was deep in the darkest part of the forest, far from the other dragons.
His shame ran deep. He was the first dragon who had ever failed at his task. The bond had broken. Shattered like glass with a crash that was heard throughout the kingdom and deep into the forests and deserts and even the sea, where all of the dragons trained, hoping one day to be chosen.
Now, because of Garille, hoping that if they are chosen, that they do not fail.
The girl had traveled far, through dangerous terrain. She had to find the red dragon that had hidden himself from all other sentient beings. The one that didn’t want to be found.
But she found him nonetheless.
Her mission was to convince the dragon to tell her everything he knew. Everything he could tell her about her uncle. The one who had betrayed the bond with this crushed, but in her mind, still noble beast.
She had left Zalta, her silver dragon, in the woods, preferring to approach by herself. She didn’t want the presence of another dragon to damage Garille’s spirit any more than it already was. Another bonded dragon might remind him of his shame, and keep him from giving her the information she so desperately needed.
The entrance of the cave was dark. Shyeanna summoned up her courage and made her way into the blackness. She guided herself through the darkness that engulfed her, sliding her hand against the damp, rocky wall to guide her.
She wished he had a torch. Her footing was unstable as she picked her steps very carefully in the darkness. The dank smell of cold wet dirt felt like it was choking her.
She could see a light far ahead. The flickering light of a
