    Sometimes, the harbingers of doom inadvertently bring joy and happiness, if only for a short time. The rising power of the Church of Purity and the restlessness they had brought to the people of Trelos had made Dame Lissel fearful and uneasy, so she rarely sent me away from her side. There was no one she could trust more, and no one who could bring her greater comfort. As for the unrest, it was mostly the small people who were to blame. The slaves and peasants that resented their position at the foot of our society.

    The Church promised them more. More food, more money, more dignity. It was a lie of course, because it was the natural order that put the slaves and peasants in their place, and we are all beholden to the nature of things. All those with sense would know that the Church could not deliver on its promise because it would mean turning nature on its head, and no man or god is above nature. And even if the Church could do the impossible and somehow turn nature on its head, who would dig the soil to grow the food? Or cart the goods to market to earn the money? No society could survive without a layer of scum to grease the wheels.

    So, the Priests of Purity spread their lies and the small-minded fools fell for them, and even held them up as unassailable truths. They preached that the souls of all men are equal in value, and the weak minded believed it to be so. I did not doubt that, deep down in their very simple hearts, the slaves and peasants knew that their place was firmly at the bottom of the pile where they could earn their way by being useful to their betters. But they all dreamt of being lords and ladies nonetheless.

    Such was my relationship with Dame Lissel—one of mistress and slave. I belonged to her, body and soul, and there was nothing that god or man could offer that could tempt me away from her. It was the nature of things that meant
