Part 1 - Agent Reporting: ‘Sophie’

What a ridiculous assignment She thought to herself as she focused her monocular on the hut at the base of the valley.

She pressed a button to activate the laser microphone… the flashes of light she’d seen were now accompanied with audio… she heard him scream, a bright flash of sparks lighting up the little shack’s windows.

Softly she swore under her breath, wondering once again how she’d drawn the short straw for this bullshit mission.

Sophie (not her real name) let her thoughts drift back, two days ago to when she’d received the call.

She’d just finished 8 months deep undercover in a high stress environment… and she’d delivered; She had been due a break, somewhere luxurious, on the Agency's dollar.

Unfortunately, as was often the case,an encrypted message had been delivered just after she’d finished packing her bags.

The Agency had received a tip that an operative’s identity had been compromised; they’d raced to extract him from his current assignment but it had been too late.

Orders were sent, vacations cancelled and here she was.

Sophie had spent two days travelling to get to the dusty backwater town, a far cry from where she’d planned to be last week.

She’d retraced his steps to a half-star hotel in the only local tourist area for miles.

She’d bluffed her way into the security office to examine the CCTV and there, her suspicions were confirmed.

He was on camera leaving the lobby with a pretty dark-haired woman, the jacket over her arm obviously concealing a weapon.

Sophie had rolled her eyes… firstly it looked like something out of a bad spy novel, secondly the whole thing was typical of Dan, lowering his guard at the sight of a pretty woman and now here she was, having to bail him out.

She’d tracked him and his captor to a handoff where he’d been sold to the local resistance and then here, a wooden cabin… in the middle of nowhere.

Another flash of light from the windows, another scream.

This one she heard a second later without the microphone, carried on the wind.

She was about to move closer when she saw something out of the corner of her eye…the dust trail of a car in the distance moving up the road.

This far out they could only be resistance, there was no other reason for anyone to be out
