    WELCOME, LOUIS!

    The Little Prince

Well done, Kate and William! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge add another son to their family on a spring day full of joy and symbolism

HRH Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge April 23, 2018 11:01 a.m. 8 lbs. 7 oz.

Sleeping’s going reasonably well so far, William reported two days after the birth. So he’s behaving himself, which is good.

Even in the Instagram age few new moms orchestrate a day- one portrait the way Princess Kate does. Her going-home outfit—a red Jenny Packham shift with white collar paired with diamond-and-pearl drop earrings—paid subtle tribute to two other women who raised future Kings of England: Her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana (who wore a similar look to debut her second son), and Queen Elizabeth, who loaned Kate the jewels, said to be a favorite set. With proud husband William outside London’s St. Mary’s hospital, Kate cradled the newest Windsor: Louis Arthur Charles, born seven hours earlier. The baby boy was snoozing peacefully, oblivious to the press pack across the street—and to the whole royal lineage thing (he’s fifth, behind brother George and sister Charlotte). And yet, when he stretched out a tiny hand, it could be mistaken for a nascent royal wave.

On April 23—the feast day for St. George, the patron saint of England, as well as William Shakespeare’s birthday—Anglophiles worldwide were alerted at 8:22 a.m. GMT when the Palace tweeted that Kate was in labor. (Wondering about her blowout? Her stylist Natasha Archer was spotted at St. Mary’s at 10 a.m.) Attended by a medical staff of 20, Kate delivered at 11:01 a.m.; by 1:02 p.m. the Palace announced that William had been on hand, and that Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well. Three hours later William left and returned to introduce the other children to their new brother. Charlotte showed off what a wave looks like with nearly three years of practice; George seemed less enthused—he’d been here before. The parents, too, took the day in stride, leaving for Kensington Palace a mere seven hours after the birth, when the very happy dad expertly clicked a car seat into a waiting Land Rover—no nerves or fussing. Over the next few days family from both sides visited while the world waited to learn the young prince’s name (it came Friday) and gamed the prospect of a fourth. Unlikely, says biographer Ingrid Seward. This newest addition completes them.

Dad brought George and Charlotte to see their brother. When the kids returned home, nanny Maria Turrion Borrallo helped, and grandma Carole Middleton did a school run on April 25.
