    Deception

Deception is a valuable weapon when utilized in war, but when used in everyday life deception only defines people who are dishonest and untrustworthy. In this context deception is an unethical ruse by word or deed used to cause people to believe or accept as reliable or authentic what is false or counterfeit. Deception is employed to get something or to get one’s own way by unrighteous subterfuge or other subtle possibly nefarious means. It operates in many guises: mendacity (lies, guile, hoaxes, fraud), trickery (cheating), twisting truth (bait and switch), deceit by actions (misdirection) or inaction - by silence, a word, a denial, or an avalanche of words. Sometimes it is an elaborate performance devised to get other people to think or act in accord with the self-serving deceiver’s personal wishes. At other times it is employed to obtain something (steal by deception) or to subvert someone else’s plan (or life). Truth can also be a deception when it is presented in an unbelievable manner. Although deception is generally a product of a self-centered point of view and personal desire in every day life it is essentially evil in intent and application. Deception is a derivative of a scheming mind which itself is a product of sin. Sin is the word the Bible uses to describe being disconnected from God. Sin imposes a change of focus from God to self. Sin is revealed by actions and attitudes derived from this self-focus, a few of which are envy, lust, depravity, theft, mean intentions, hatred, violence, evil and deception. [Read the SIN - Rebellion Within by K. P. Walker for more on the topic of sin.]

Deception was used by Satan (the conniving and jealous adversary of God and man) when he urged Eve (through the lie of a deceptively friendly serpent) to sin (turn away from the Lord
