    Prologue

The story takes place in southern Alabama along the Tensaw River in the year 1852, twenty years after the Indian Creek massacre of1832. Rose lives a very sheltered life until she reaches the age of twelve when her adventures begin.

In this first story Rose meets Mrs. Stone and thinks she is a witch seeking to make a ghoul. She needs virgin blood, her blood. She screams to her mother, and her teacher, but no one will listen.

    1 Ouija Board

Rose, a blue-eyed blond hair twelve-year-old girl, sat in the first pew next to her mother. She was only half listening to the preacher. Her attention was on Mary Beth, a dark hair girl, in the pew two rows behind her. They were tapping out a code talking to each other. She used her pencil and lightly pecked at the wood rail under her arm.

Her mother, Mrs. Joan Donovan, an attractive woman in her mid-thirties, became irritated at the noise, and said loudly under breath, Stop that!

Reverend Halley stopped his message and looked down at Mrs. Donovan, Sorry, ma'am. I didn't mean to offend you, but one should be aware of Satan.

Mrs. Donovan, embarrassed, immediately looked down and shook her head for the preacher to continue.

Thank you, that is very kind of you, the preacher said, smiled, and continued.

Mrs. Donovan pulled Rose close and whispered, You wait until I get you home.

On the way home Rose received more than the usual lecture about behaving in church and found herself restricted to her room for the rest of the day. She didn't mind. The weather was gloomy. Her father said it was going to rain before the day was out.

She sat in her room looking out the open window enjoying the howl of the wind going through the old barn out back. Her big black cat, Satan, was on her lap purring loudly. She named her cat Satan to irritate her mother. She wasn't really rebellious in nature, but she wanted a little more freedom than her mother wanted to give her.

She watched her father, Mr. Jim Donovan, a strong wiry man, put away the horses and carriage from her window. She loved him and felt that they were very close. He looked up at her and shook his head. Quickly she turned away from the window. He didn't understand what had happened. It wasn't her fault the preacher embarrassed her mother.

She put her cat down and went to her secret hole beneath the loose board under her bed. She pulled out her Ouija board. The light from the living room below came up through the crack at the bottom of the hole, but she ignored this. It was her spy hole. Quickly going to the door, she listened quietly to her mother making dinner in the kitchen below.

If her mother ever knew she had the Ouija board, she would skin her alive. Feeling she was okay, she placed the board on the bed. This was the first time she had a chance to use it. It was old and small about one-fourth the size of a chessboard. She had found it down by the creek yesterday afternoon. It had black marks on it where someone had tried to burn it. She could still make out the letters. She ran her fingers over them. It gave her goose bumps. She was trying to tell Mary Beth about it in church when her mother yelled at her.

Then her cat jumped up onto her bed and settled himself in the middle of the board. No Satan! You can't have all of the board only part of it. She pushed him off the letters and picked up a broken pencil to use as a pointer. Now, we'll try this thing out.

She closed her eyes and began moving the broken pencil. The letter 'H' came up followed quickly with 'E... L... P!'

    Who needs help?

    The pointer continued to move. "T.. H.. E.. Y K.. I.. L.. L M.. Y F.. R.. I.. E.. N.. D.. S

Rose threw the pencil down and stood up. She felt something, and she was scared. Someone wanted her help, but did she dare ask who?

    Gingerly she picked up the
