Steven Samblis is the creator of the 1 Habit book series.He is the founder of 1 Habit Press. Before creating Samblis Press, Steven had a meteoric career in business that saw him go from being ranked among the top 50 rookie stockbrokers at Dean Witter, to speaking before 250,000 people for The Investors Institute. He has spoken before congress on shareholder’s rights representing T Boone Pickens’ “United Shares Holders Association.”In 1989 he founded “The Reason For My Success”. which grew into one of the largest sellers of self-improvement programs in North America. The Habit: Pat Yourself On the Back -- Often

Why: Have you ever heard the saying, You're your own worst enemy?
Often we are so much better at mentally beating ourselves down than we are at lifting ourselves up.
Do you agree?
Think of a time when you did something that you were mad at yourself for doing. Did you beat yourself up mentally?
Did it happen today, yesterday, or last week? Did it happen several times today?
With so much negativity in the world, one thing we do have control over is our thoughts.
Although I mentioned that you should 'pat yourself on the back,' what I mean is that you should practice saying good things to yourself and become your own best cheerleader, not your own worst enemy.
Having grown up in a volatile, physically, mentally, and verbally abusive household caused negative thoughts to continually swirl around in my head.
At the ripe old age of 51, I looked at my life and said, Is this all there is? There's gotta be more to life than this.
You see, those first 51 years of my life I was trapped in my own prison. My mind was filled with constant negativity.
As I was driving to work one day, I asked myself questions like, What is the purpose of this planet? What is the purpose of me being here?
When I got to the office, I saw a message on Facebook that said, I'm a life coach. I took a break, and I'm ready to get back into it. I'm looking for five women who want to change their life.
Wow! I felt like she was talking to me. Even though I didn't know her, I believed that she would change my life. So I raised my hand, and I jumped all in. It was the first time in my life that I raised my hand to change me.
I had been a people-pleaser my whole life, and the opportunity to become someone different was very intriguing, yet scary. I was willing to take the chance and do something different.
I am so grateful to myself for saying 'yes' to me.
What does this have to do with patting yourself on the back?
Well, I spent decades with people saying negative things to me, and it got to the point that I learned how to say negative things to myself faster than they could. I believed all of the negativity, and I had become my own worst enemy.
By working with my life coach, she taught me how to become my own best cheerleader, and I started cheering for myself regularly. It completely changed the way I see and talk to myself.
What patting myself on the back has done for me is that it's given me strength and courage to no longer require other people to support me emotionally or mentally. This is HUGE because it's given me the strength and courage to step out without a crutch.
It's given me the confidence to stand up and say I am here and ready to change your world when you're ready.
It's given me the strength to keep pushing forward even when it feels like things are failing. I've learned to fail forward because my cheerleader keeps me going.
How do you pat yourself on the back?
You look at your accomplishments, and you say, WOW! I am amazing. Look at what I did.
It may feel weird at first, but that will change. You'll learn to love it and to say it more frequently. It will become second-nature to congratulate yourself on a job well done. It will help you to gain confidence and belief in yourself like no one else has ever believed in you.
After all, you are the most important human in your life. Others will come and go, but you will always be with you.
As you go through life and do things that you are proud of, remember to pat yourself on the back. You don't have to do it out loud, but if you feel confident enough, I strongly urge you to say it out loud to yourself and others.
It's time for you to step into your power and live your best life as a brilliant and amazing person you are.
The Un-Habit: Stop Saying Yes to Everyone
Why: Yes is an awesome word but, when used too often, can be draining.
Have you ever said ‘yes’ to someone and then regretted saying it because you 1) don’t have enough time to fulfill your new obligation, 2) don’t want to do what you said ‘yes’ to, 3) meant to say ‘no,’ but ‘yes’ came out of your mouth?
I hear ya. Been there, done that.
As a reformed people-pleaser, I know all too well how hard saying ‘no’ can be, but also know how important it is.
Saying ‘no’ is a way of setting boundaries, of saying, I’m here, and this is what I want and what I don’t want.
Here are three easy examples of how to say ‘no’ without saying ‘no.’
Thank you so much for wanting my help. I appreciate it. I’m going to pass this time because I’m afraid I won’t be able to devote enough time to your project and give it my all. I’ll try to think of someone else who can help you.
I’m honored you’d like me to help you with that. Your trust in me means a lot. While I love what you do and want to support you, I’m concentrating on building my business right now and need to stay focused. I’m on the verge of a breakthrough. I’ll let you know if I think of someone who can help you.
Oh, man. I want to help you with that because I believe in everything you do, but I’m unable to help you at this time. Please check in with me in a couple of months. I should be further along with my projects so I can give you my all. In the meantime, I’ll let you know if I think of someone else who can help you.
These examples will enable you to say no without feeling weird about it (I used to feel weird saying no, but I now use these phrases (and others) to make it much easier for me).
What happens when we say ‘yes’ to others is we are saying ‘no’ to ourselves.
Saying ‘yes’ can create feelings of regret, tension, frustration, aggravation, resentment, etc.
Learning to say ‘no’ and creating your boundaries will help you gain a lot of confidence to step up for yourself when you want to and need to.
