    introduction

    why the new hope times?

With all the bad news that gets printed around the globe, I thought it was about time that we found a way to inspire hope every day. A paper would have been a great idea, but let’s face it, bad news sells better than good news, whether for shock value or for helping people feel a little better than someone else who’s having it worse than them. The New Hope Times was born out of a blog I began in 2008 called Hope Worth Fighting For. This is my conviction.

    WHY 52 ARTICLES?

In our busy society, I figured you’d find it time-consuming and perhaps a little distracting to focus on a new thing every day. Steven Covey, famed author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, teaches the benefits of planning on a weekly basis as opposed to daily or monthly. Fifty-two weeks will cover you for one whole year. Sit a magna anno! (Let it be a great year.)

    WHY ME?

All of us have to overcome self-doubt. I’m no different. I asked myself the question, Why should anyone listen to what’s in my heart about the subject of hope? Three things: First, I grew up in a racially divided South Africa, where hopes were dashed as routine; where faith, education, and the love of family was what saw you through. Secondly, in the space of four short years, I lost three family members to preventable illness, one of whom was my own dear mother. Something happened, however, in 1994 when Nelson Mandela was released. We waited. We watched. We knew. The flame of hope had been sparked again. Finally, to be true to the purpose for my life, I am impelled to share this with you.

    WHO INSPIRES US?

Other than one or two role models and a bunch of great authors . . . you do!
