Chapter One
Edward Starz knew the importance of a promise. And, with this in mind he paused for a moment as he searched for his dear friend Emily. ‘I do hope she hasn’t forgotten we are meeting for lunch’ he thought as he looked from this display to that, to the queue at the PLEASE PAY HERE counter, and finally, to the door marked STAFF ONLY. Well of course it was going to be busy, the best Toy Department in town, Christmas nearly here, and a special pre Millenium Sale. The expectations of the new century, the year 2000 were to be celebrated and how. What a sale it was. Life-size lion cubs nestled up to each other in their den and Edward couldn’t help going over to examine a snow leopard, all on its own, on a pretend rock above the cubs. ‘I say, I rather like you’ and laughed to himself as he realised he had spoken out loud. ‘Emily will have me thrown out of the store for acting strangely - and I’m sure talking to a snow leopard will count!’
‘Edward!’ the clear well-spoken voice belonged of course to Emily Bunting, the Manager of the Toy Department and Edward’s dear friend. ‘I just spotted you amongst the crowds and it looked like you were having a conversation with Maximillian.’ Edward smiled with delight as Emily gave the snow leopard a little tweak on his whiskers.
‘You mean this is Maximillian? Well how funny I should pick out one of your favourites from all the rest - are you going to put him to one side though Emily?’
Emily smiled too. They both knew it wasn’t strange at all to know things about each other. Their long and happy friendship over the years had often meant one knowing what the other was thinking, or even visiting to find they were expected or needed when they got there. Both lived alone never marrying or having children just living full and happy lives, taking life as it came and making
