    Summary

I had never imagined that a simple, adventurous trip could end in a tragic and enigmatic way.

It was meant to be just another climbing, like any other, but it turned out to be much more than that. Fate had reserved a real-life horror movie, in which my friend and I would be the main actors in a plot showered by fear, horror, blood, and death.

To climb the Pico da Neblina in the Amazon state was our objective, but fate had a prank for us, and we had to face the greatest nightmare of our lives.

Upon writing this book, memories of what we faced in that environment of darkness and hostility in the forest return to haunt me once more, but this is the best way I have for telling about the days of fear in the Amazon forest.

Many have sought me, wanting to know my version of what truly happened in the forest: National and foreign news, specialized magazines, and anonymous people, all curious about the event that revolutionized the planet.

I’ll try to narrate to you, the reader, the real moments that my friend Igor and I lived there, each step of a trip that was supposed to be an adventure and turned into horror.

Prepare yourself to enter a world of fear, despair, angst, panic, and death. Dread in the Amazon Forest will invoke your worst fears.

    CHAPTER I

    Preparations for the Climbing

    ––––––––

It all started when Igor, my best friend, decided to schedule a climbing of Brazil’s highest mountain, the Pico da Neblina (Mist Peak), located in the Amazon state, frontier with Venezuela, in the rainforest. A place away from any civilization and that would forever change the course of our lives.

It was the middle of June and winter had already arrived, with a weak drizzle and an icy wind in the busy streets of the capital of Sao Paulo, the sky gray against the city that never stops.

I was in my office, counting the remaining seconds to end my shift when I received a call. It was Igor, best friend and climbing partner who had scheduled for us to go to Brazil’s highest mountain, the Pico da Neblina.

    Hi, Igor. What’s up, man!

Hey there, Leo! Ready for our adventure in the forest?

Sure, today’s the last day here at the office, my vacation will start very soon. We can go to Manaus right on Monday.

Alright, Leo, I’ll get the equipment ready and the last details for Monday then.

Igor, did our professional guide, Kaka, showed up?

Yep, he’ll come. He sent his answer today, but he can only come on Monday, his mom isn’t feeling so good. He should be there a little before we leave to Manaus.

Now, Leo, the authorization to enter the National Park of the Pico da Neblina was approved this morning. It was hell, man, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation is in charge of this, and they were complicating things, I thought they wouldn’t allow it.

I was worried about it, too. Thank goodness things worked out, or else we would just be wasting our money.

I had to call a local guide, accredited of course, or they wouldn’t go through with the approval. At least I have my connections. He laughed. What I thought weird was the guy working for the Institute, someone named Sergio, his voice was not normal. Dragged, slow, quite strange, but the important is that he gave our credentials in time.

You’re the man, Igor! Maybe he was tired, who knows. I hope Kaka will arrive on time, he knows everything about that region and has climbed the peak before. It will be harder without him, my friend.

I know, Leo. Everything will work out, be positive and relax, man! He laughed again.

Alright then, I’ll be there tomorrow morning to check the last details.

    Okay, dude. See you tomorrow.

Igor was my buddy, we had been friends since childhood, had studied in the same school and later, in the same college. He was a great friend, playful and with a liking for pulling pranks. His strong character, intelligent and cunning, made him a rightful man in every aspect. He wanted to be a military man, part of the police.

We had thrown a huge party when he had joined the Federal Police and, as part of the celebration, climbed the third-highest Brazilian mountain. The Pico da Bandeira, with an altitude of 9,488 feet, was in the Serra of Caparaó, in the state of Espirito Santo.

Being part of the federal police, Igor had connections with many influential people, which at times could be of help in receiving authorizations for certain areas that were not always easy.

We had been making preparations for the trip for more than a month, buying tickets, reserving a stay in a Manaus’ hostel, buying
