Chapter One
Kendra Dair backed into Spencer as she dribbled the ball. You do realize you two coming out changes nothing?
Are you going to shoot or talk?
Spencer demanded and gave her old friend a shove.
Kendra feinted right and spun left the moment her good friend Spencer Devery moved, and she drove to the hoop, shooting and scoring. Spencer snagged the ball and bounced it.
I’m serious,
Kendra griped. It’s like nothing’s changed. In fact, we’re getting more looks.
Oh, please, no one’s looking at you,
Spencer muttered and took a few steps back.
Kendra rolled her eyes. Spencer had been out since she was fourteen and had already ridden out the storm. So, she probably didn’t notice.
"No because they’re all looking at you, Kendra retorted.
Shoot the ball already."
Spencer headed for the hoop, and Kendra stepped in giving her a body check.
Come on,
Spencer growled and shoved her shoulder into Kendra. What do you want? An engraved invite? Just make your move already.
Spencer tried to shoot, but Kendra blocked, knocking the ball out of her hand.
Spencer pivoted, beating Kendra to the ball. Besides you were out before I got back.
She bounced it a few times and fired off another shot.
Kendra jumped but didn’t put much heart into it, deciding to give Spencer a little dignity. She only had ten points to Kendra’s twenty.
The ball hit the rim and rolled in.
Kendra retrieved it and wiped sweat from her brow. Knowing is one thing, but having a woman go out with me is different,
she said. What’s it like walking around town with her?
Spencer wiped her own forehead. Like being ten feet tall and the look on Harry’s face every time he sees us together just makes me smirk,
Spencer replied with a grin. He looks at us with his nose in the air, but I got the better deal.
Kendra grunted. I heard Justine’s pregnant. That’s why he was so hot to marry her and help her get that promotion.
Are you serious?
Spencer demanded.
Suzy, the lab tech, told Nita. I overheard them a few weeks ago when I was at the clinic talking to the doc about my hand.
Clearly, nothing’s wrong with it,
Spencer said dryly, giving Kendra’s hand a pointed look.
He thought it might be carpal tunnel, but it was just stiff.
Since you don’t want to man-up and ask her out, I’ll have Katie invite her to join us for dinner at the hotel tomorrow night,
Spencer said. You can make your move then.
What if she freaks out?
By now, everyone in Cozy Bend knew all about Kendra being an intersex female. She’d been teased mercilessly in junior high and high school.
Kendra had learned how to box so she could kick some ass and shut down the bullshit with her fists in case words didn’t get the job done.
She’d accepted her body, but she was still contemplating the surgery that would remove the offending penis from her life. The doctors said there was no known reason hermaphrodites occurred. They were genetic anomalies and came in many combinations.
She was genetically a female but had some male anatomy. She had been born with both a vagina and a penis. Her parents had had the vagina surgically closed.
She could still imagine their surprise at finding she was a female.
Well, she knows all about you by now,
Spencer said. Hell, everyone knows. She’s probably curious.
Aren’t we all?
Kendra demanded dryly and rolled her eyes.
Spencer smirked. Least, it’s not tiny, so she won’t be telling everybody you have a little dick and premature ejaculation.
Kendra threw the ball at her, and Spencer caught it, laughing. She’d never had sex with Spencer, but they’d done a lot of kissing as teens on their quest for experience. Spencer was one of the few kids who’d merely given her a cursory glance in gym before making some rude comment about her still being in a training bra.
I don’t, you know,
Kendra said.
Don’t start getting retro self-esteem issues now,
Spencer said in an irritated tone. You’ve got nothing to be ashamed of. You’re beautiful, smart, and hard working. You’re practically an heiress, too.
Yeah, there’s that,
she grumbled.
Her parents owned two hotels now, and this one was a resort spot as of this summer. The water park and arcade were enjoyed by locals along with the golf course. The spa would be up and running by fall.
The hotel was already overbooked and getting rave reviews on its improvements. Her brother was in New Orleans running the second hotel, and her father was already talking about one in New Mexico.
They were,
