About this ebook
Mathematics is a tricky subject. Those who love, enjoy it much and those who don't, feel it's boring. I lost interest in mathematics while in 7th class. Based on what I remember, it was mainly due to lack of understanding of negative numbers. By nature, I am kinaesthetic person and therefore I refuse to accept anything unless understood thoroughly. Generally, just memorization doesn't work for me and the same thing happened about multiplication of negative numbers. Our teacher presented them as rules and I refused to accept them at face value. One year later my cousin grandfather started living with us and he had great interest in teaching. Moreover, his concepts in mathematics were extremely clear and he could answer all my crazy questions. This retriggered my interest in mathematics. The whole journey was so joyful that I wish everyone gets a grandfather like him who is at home to help with fundamental questions in studies.
Later, when I was in 9th I was introduced to Vedic Math by my close friend. At that time, I thoroughly enjoyed it and started using it to an extend where I completely forgot methods taught in the school. Few years back I started taking courses in Vedic math and I repeatedly received questions about relevance of the course in school. Even though these methods cannot be directly used in school today, some of the methods are being included in school curriculum and therefore I decided to author books as per the curriculum.
While developing Vedic Math book for a particular class I realized that numbers being abstract, it's also important to explain some of the concepts through art and craft. Therefore, I decided to also add Creative Math as a part of this book. This is because learning is much more effective through Activities and Games for many.
When I started thinking about developing books as per the curriculum, next question was which board to follow. After a bit of research, I got to know that CBSE is most popular board in India and therefore I decided to develop Vedic Math books for CBSE curriculum. Finally, I had a choice of developing books from class I and I decided to develop books for secondary school first. I first published a book for class 8 and received very good response. Therefore, we released 2nd edition of 'Vedic Math for 8th Class'. Now I am pleased to release Vedic and Creative Math for 7th Class.
The structure of this book and sequence of CBSE syllabus is not the same and it is intentional. The book is divided into three sections. Section I is to learn basic principles, section II is for application of principles and section III covers Creative Geometry. Section I is mostly to explain the methods and it is important to refer section II to confirm that concepts are understood and ability to apply concepts is developed in pupils. Section III mainly uses Creative Math to explain concepts of geometry. It is fun to learn geometry in this manner rather than conventional method.
The book is designed in such a way that all required methods from Vedic Math are covered here and the student need not refer to any other book to learn the basics. Additionally, numbers (data) are represented in pictorial format or charts wherever appropriate. This certainly simplifies the learning. Geometry is explained through activities and this makes the learning very simple and easy to retain. The key focus of this book is Fractions, Decimals and Integers. I am confident that this is fun and joyful journey to all the students and their parents.

DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my mother’s aunt Miss Anila Paidarkar who cuddled me since birth. She was one of the very few rational people of her generation that I have seen. She was at least 3 generations ahead in her thinking. She also had a good tact of presenting her thoughts without hurting and offending the other person and this helped her to present her viewpoint in front of all the generations. I also want to remember all the masters of mathematics across the globe who helped to develop mathematics that further helped to prove many scientific principles and establish them. This dedication is only complete by remembering Shree Bharathi Krushna Teerthaji Maharaj and other Indian scholars of mathematics. Shree Bharathi Krushna Teerthaji independently revived the principles and simplified mathematics in many ways. This book is only possible because of Shree Bharathi Krushna Teerthaji

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Six years ago, I started taking courses in Vedic Maths. These courses were primarily for pupils from primary and secondary school. I used to conduct a separate course on arithmetic and algebra. Many pupils used to ask me a question about the relevance of the course to their school curriculum of a particular class. While working with them I realized that the courses shall be designed in such a way that pupils can easily correlate them with the syllabus in the school and this is when I decided to design courses as per the curriculum of each class. I want to acknowledge all the inputs and feedback provided by the pupils, directly and indirectly, to make the course effective and relevant. I also want to thank all the pupils for being open about their inputs which resulted in this series of books. I also want to thank my very old friend Shree Dharmendra Sharma who designed the beautiful cover of this book as a token of his love towards me.
The Game of Joyness
Arithmetic can become fun when you play The Game of Joyness. This is a game we specially designed to improve your mental math. This is similar to Monopoly, Business or Vyapar. This game helps you to learn much more than mental math. It teaches money, capitals of Indian states and major crops in all the states. All this can be learnt while having so much fun. We started an initiative called ‘The more you play, the more you learn’ and this is the first game in this series. You may order it on our website http://www.netrutwa.com/shop
and keep your child away from the screen.

Section III mainly uses Creative Math to explain the concepts of geometry. It is fun to learn geometry in this manner rather than the conventional method.
I have repeated some of the chapters from my book ‘Vedic Math for 8th Class’ here and this is because your learning of next year gets covered 1 year sooner! Additionally, concepts of Vedic Maths are easily expandable and it’s easy to cover the whole concept rather than just a part of it.
I have explained principles wherever relevant. This shall help the pupil to understand them further and apply them confidently. In the curriculum of 7th class, I have covered Bar numbers. This is a very simple concept which eliminates the need for numbers greater than 5 and simplifies calculations. This is also relevant when you know negative numbers. Additionally, I have also explained patterns in decimal numbers and usage of 9 in the context of decimals. Vedic math especially treats decimals. This offers a deeper understanding of decimals as compared to the curriculum. The key focus of this book is Fractions, Decimals and Integers.
Even though I have covered most of the syllabus in this book, it does not cover the whole syllabus 100% and this book has many additional things that are not part of the syllabus. At a high level, some of the concepts in solid shapes, symmetry and practical geometry are not covered 100% and the students can learn them quickly based on their learnings from this book.
I am confident that this is fun and joyful journey to all the students and their parents. I wish you all the best for more love towards mathematics in general and Vedic / Creative Math specifically.
2. Introduction to Vedic MathS
As I just told you in the previous chapter, one of my friends introduced me to Vedic math in 1992 (when I was in school). As he was elder to me, he was certain that it is helpful, as it had helped him during his school and college days. Since my school days, I am in love with Vedic math. It has helped me during my school and until now. Recently, one of my friends mentioned about challenges of pupils at school. One of the major challenges was math. While discussing, I realized that Vedic maths is a solution to their challenges and I took a course for a small group of pupils. This course helped the pupils considerably and I decided to author books on Vedic Math & Creative Math. Before we start learning, let’s understand more about Vedic Math and Creative Math.
What is Vedic Maths?
Vedic math is a different way of doing math. This method is simpler and easier than prevalent methods. It is much faster and more suitable for mental math. Vedic math mainly covers algebra and arithmetic. Some part of Vedic arithmetic is developed on algebraic principles. Naturally, it is applicable in coordinate geometry and matrices. This method has many advantages. One of the advantages is that you do not need to learn algebra separately as it is just an extension of what you already apply in arithmetic. Arithmetic is simplified using algebra. Vedic math even has new or different methods to solve algebraic problems. Additionally, everything in Vedic math is based on only 16 main Suthra or formulae and this simplifies new learnings.
The uniqueness of Vedic Maths
Many methods in Vedic math are unique and they were not known to modern math. Let’s learn the uniqueness of Vedic math.
Only 16 Suthra or formulae cover all the methods.
Vedic math methods are integrated as a system.
They are more suitable for mental math.
They are simple and they are interrelated to each other.
They are 2 to 5 times faster than traditional methods.
Advantages of Vedic Maths
Simple mental methods that enhance mathematical intelligence.
Vedic methods are 2 - 5 times faster than traditional methods. This helps in to solve sums quickly and correctly.
Quick for learning as the same methods are used in different branches of math.
History of Vedic Maths
Math has been a part of Vedic literature. Even though the timing of Vedas is not known, historians predict that they were authored sometime between 500 BC to 1500 BC or even earlier. Shree Bharathi Krushna Tirthaji reinvented methods in Vedic math. He was a brilliant student and obtained honours in all the subjects he studied i.e. Savskruth, philosophy, English, mathematics, history and science. Between 1911 and 1918, he reconstructed ancient system of mathematics i.e. now called Vedic mathematics. Shree Bharathi Krushna wrote 16 books expanding 16 formulae but those were lost. In 1958, Shree Bharathi Krushna authored a book called Vedic Mathematics. This is the only body of knowledge available today.
How Vedic Math is Different from Abacus?
This is a very common question and many parents are curious about it. Abacus is so popular now days that many people ask this question to me. It is important to understand that abacus requires a tool i.e. counting frame. Such tools are not allowed in any exam or cannot be used in daily life. Abacus is useful only for basic arithmetic. Vedic math is a completely new way of doing math. Vedic math is mental and very fast as compared to other methods. Therefore, side-by-side comparison
