1. Introduction
Firstly, this book has been written to help students, parents, teachers and anyone else needing quotes on climate change. It has not been written to provide a platform for a particular view. In fact, there is a great little section at the end to help students plan assignments or debating points.
So, what is climate change? In simplified terms, it is any significant long-term change in the patterns of weather that would be expected for a particular region. One of the most dramatic examples was the ending of the last ice age about 7,000 years ago. However, what concerns a lot of people now are the recent changes in the environment which are believed to be caused by increased greenhouse gases. Scientists have looked at factors such as global temperatures, shrinking ice sheets, warming oceans, decreased snow cover, declining Arctic sea ice, ocean acidification and extreme weather events. There is widespread belief that these changes have been caused by human activity.
The quotes have been grouped into six different categories: political leaders, religious leaders, other leaders, academics & scientists, entertainers and climate change deniers (or sceptics). Sometimes, a person falls into multiple categories such as Arnold Schwarzenegger or Peter Garrett who both had careers in entertainment before going into politics. In these cases, the quotes were placed in a category where the person worked the longest or were best known.
Note that there are spelling differences across the English-speaking world and the quote's spelling will reflect the source. For example, a quote sourced from an American will spell 'skeptic' rather than 'sceptic' which is from a British or Australian source.
Hopefully, you will enjoy this book and find some brilliant quotes
