The Evangelism Dilemma

About this ebook
Inspired by the events of 9/11, this book begins and ends with a Jaw-Dropping Turn of Events. Banzai (his chosen nickname), to whom this book is dedicated, was living on a Chinatown bridge in Honolulu, Hawaii, an outcast not unlike this Biblical beggar: "At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores." (Luke 16:20).
His story is a living testament to the book's premise - the sounding of a blaring, worldwide evangelistic emergency alert: "70,000 die every day without hearing the Gospel!" As one turns each page, he/she will feel the spirit of Banzai pulsating throughout, right up until the very end, concluding with a climatic, absurd jaw-dropping turn of events. WARNING! No Peeking! Wait for it.

Joe’s ministry can be summed up in three words: Chaos, Creativity and Controversy - three elements implicit in any successful innovative endeavor. Cecil B. DeMille, renowned producer of Biblical epics, once wrote, “Creativity is a drug I cannot live without.” Joe’s mantra reads, “Creativity is my drug of choice.” Look for this creative opiate to make itself increasingly apparent in ongoing innovative endeavors.

The Evangelism Dilemma - Joe Noland
Endorsements
Many years ago, in the providence of God, I met the remarkable Joe Noland and his equally remarkable and delightful wife, Doris. Our friendship commenced then and has developed strongly over the years.
I was amazed by his giftedness. Few tasks seemed outside of his ability to achieve success. Seemingly, without breaking stride, he assesses circumstances and opportunities, and strategies persuasive and practical, emerge. With his unlimited energy and leadership, problems become opportunities, which inevitably, lead to further growth.
I like Joe’s writings. There is muscle-power in his simply chosen words and easy to follow logic. In our world of cultivated disbelief, he succeeds in exuding an atmosphere of a dauntless, victorious faith.
However, Commissioner Joe Noland is so much more than a thinker and writer – he is a doer – a builder and extraordinary achiever. Wherever he and Doris have served, dormant resources and programmes have been revitalised with soul-saving consequences. New Kingdom-building Corps have been established – Officers, soldiers, and others have found the joys of spiritual success and – if my knowledge is correct – the new opening of our work throughout Micronesia was successfully achieved.
Love for our Lord and Saviour is at the root of it all. The industrial world would pay a great deal to have their own Joe Noland but ‘our Joe’ is what he is, and does what he does, because, supremely, he loves the Lord.
Our inexhaustible Commissioner Joe Noland loves the lost and works for their redemption. He loves the redeemed and seeks to make them more secure and aware of their soul-winning roles. He just loves and revels in his Calling.
My two – long-cherished – friends figure prominently in my daily prayers but, lingering in my heart is the thought, ‘how I wish I could have been an actual member of ‘Team Noland’’!

Salvation Army Leader
Joe, with characteristic verve and edginess, touches on a contemporary malady in the Church – evangelism inertia. In the words of the punchy gospel hymn, he can ‘sit no longer idly by, while the heedless millions die.’
This is a literal, not a figurative number, for the ‘mission-minded mavericks.’
Joe does something else provocative – he links catastrophe and disaster with evangelistic strategy. A devastating hurricane in Hawaii and a diabolical terrorist attack in Manhattan, remarkably, both on September 11, and both during his jurisdiction as a Salvation Army leader.
This is a real battle, and there are real casualties.
Joe once coined the phrase ‘aggressive, adaptive evangelism,’ as operative for our day. Here it is, repackaged – remarkably so.
Be enticed, startled, moved and wryly humored – the net result will surely be an evangelistic vibrancy, for you, for the good of many.
Yes indeed, Joe – let’s aggressively and adaptively storm those forts of darkness.
Thanks for leading the charge.

Noland has done it again! This book is an alarming prophetic call to rise to the challenge of this era! With clarity, wisdom, and boldness he encourages us to be daring and courageous as we rush to the frontlines of the battle for humanity in today’s world! As relevant as it is revolutionary you will want to read it - then I Pray you’ll go and live it! The world for God!

This book is a blaring Emergency Alert! Noland ingeniously weaves the essence of Evangeline Booth’s ‘World for God’ with the warp of Hurricane Iniki and the weft of the Twin Towers annihilation, interlaced with transformation stories generated by Revolution Hawaii, into a great commission tapestry of ‘8 World-Winning Missional Imperatives’. Billions need Jesus! We are sent by Him. With Him. For them! Now!

Author of "GO FOR SOULS:
A guide for the salvationist soul-winner"
(with Frances Longino)
The Evangelism Dilemma by Commissioner Joe Noland is an urgent and persuasive call to action in the daunting times in which we live. The book opens with a brief introduction to a homeless, addicted, broken young man from Hawaii who goes by the name Banzai. Noland pledges that the reader will feel the spirit of Banzai pulsating throughout
the book that will conclude with a climatic, absurd jaw-dropping turn of events
for Banzai. The author fulfills his enigmatic promise – and I urge readers not to read the final chapter until finishing the whole book. It will be well worth the wait!
