About this ebook

When the Orient Express makes an unscheduled stop at Mont Blanc, Britain’s finest clandestine agent, Fotherington-Tomas and his ever faithful sidekick, Maxwell, face a desperate race against time and the snowy wastes of the mountain massif, in order to stop the terrible Mad Monks from unleashing madness across the European Continent.

With less than twenty-four hours before chaos ensues and a petrified climbing companion in tow, how on earth can Fotherington-Tomas hope to beat an army of deranged zealots with ninja-like skills and a penchant for old British sitcoms, and how will we know if he is successful, given that most of Europe is already well beyond the bounds of sanity?

Join us and find out, in the latest and greatest instalment of The Adventures of Fotherington-Tomas, brought to you by your favourite new author of humorous fiction and short stories, R. A. Gregory!

R.A. Gregory

R.A. Gregory (a.k.a. Robin Alexander Gregory or just plain old Rob Gregory) is an author and animal welfare consultant who splits his time predominantly between Northern Thailand and New Zealand, writing books, helping people to help animals and generally trying to live as contrarian a life as is possible. Consequently, he aspires to no particular genre or style, just tries to write stories that he hopes will make people smile a bit and think about how absurd the world really is (and how much better it would be if he were in charge).

The shrill blast of a whistle and a cloud of piping-hot steam announced the arrival of The Orient Express as it pulled into the platform of the tiny, alpine station of Mont Blanc. It was quite a spectacular sight, made all the more impressive by the fact that the train was not supposed to stop there and was not designed for mountain ascents.

Two figures alighted from the Ultra-First Class carriage at the rear of the train and waved to the harassed driver and chief stoker at the other end of the snow-covered locomotive, impervious to the hostile glares of the other passengers, who had been expecting to disembark in Vienna quite a few hours earlier.

Be a good fellow and unload our bags if you would, shouted Fotherington-Tomas to a perplexed-looking railway official, who happened to be passing. Fotherington-Tomas and Mister Maxwell. Leather trunk with gold piping. It’s in the luggage compartment. Don’t worry about the picnic hamper in our suite, it’s empty.

The railway worker looked at Fotherington-Tomas with a mixture of disbelief and working-class hatred, then suddenly changed his tune when a gold sovereign flew through the air and landed in his gloved palm.

Right you are, sir. Of course, sir. Would you like to borrow my daughter as well, sir? he said in a broad Lancastrian accent, before shuffling off in the direction of the luggage compartment.

Fotherington-Tomas watched the departing figure with interest. Strange fellow, he muttered to himself.
