Chapter One

Pierce woke up slowly , just as he always did. He’d met people who woke up ready to greet both the sun and the day. People who even enjoyed the process of a morning routine. He was pretty sure that they were all crazy.

He rubbed his face as he yawned, then squinted toward the clock on his bedside table. He couldn’t see it from where he was lying, sprawled on his stomach, nearly diagonal across his small bed.

With a muttered curse, he stretched his arm out to turn the clock to face him. Through the just-awake fog in his brain, there was a worry that he’d overslept. As his fingers brushed the cheap plastic surface, he winced and caught his breath. The muscles in his chest and back tugged in a sharp protest at the movement.

After several tries, he finally managed to spin the clock around to see the time. The plus side of all the effort was that he discovered he hadn’t overslept. He flopped back down onto his stomach and sighed.

He still had time to get ready. Not a lot of time, but more than he really needed. Hopefully, somewhere between now and the time he had to walk out the door, he would also have time to work the kinks and soreness out of his back. Otherwise, he’d end up having to limp into the ceremony like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. He had a feeling that no one would appreciate that.

Pierce rolled over onto his back slowly and rubbed his arm absently. It didn’t do much to ease the dull ache that had been there since yesterday. It was a new ache, but pain wasn’t a new sensation by a long shot.

In fact, he’d grown used to waking up even stiffer and achier than he’d been when he’d gone to sleep. He usually woke up somehow more exhausted too. At least now the reasons for it weren’t illegal.

You’re getting old, he muttered as he forced himself to sit up.

Just because he had plenty of time right now didn’t mean that it couldn’t slip away from him. Furthermore, lying around in bed too long after he’d woken up was always a dangerous game. Especially considering that he hadn’t even remembered to set his alarm last night when he’d gotten in from work. That had been a serious mistake. It was sheer luck that he’d woken up right now at all.

Even though he was always tired when he woke, he tended to sleep like the dead. One of his father’s girlfriends had said once that he slept too deeply to get any rest. It didn’t necessarily make sense to him when he was a kid, but now that he
