    Getting Real - Take Responsibility

    If you want to catapult your results in your business and if you want to be the successful business owner that you dream of, then you need to get real - it’s that simple. You cannot tell yourself weak excuses and expect results. You are responsible for your time and therefore, the abundance or lack of it. It’s not out of your control. How can you manage multiple businesses if you tell yourself this crap?

    If you’re not getting the results you want in your business, the harsh truth is that it’s probably because of you! I know this might sting at first; stay with me though. The moment you start to take responsibility for your results, the moment you’re able to actually influence them positively.

    Your business success is in your control. The results you get and the results you don’t get is actually good news. You cannot blame others for the results you have in your life or business because you will never take responsibility for them. If you never take responsibility, you’re never really empowered to make the changes you need to succeed. Yes, there are elements outside our control, but we are still in control of changing what doesn’t work and influencing our results from within. In that respect, there is nothing worse as a business owner than feeling that everything is on top of you instead of you being on top of it. The first foundation must be taking responsibility for it and being constant with never-ending improvement.

    The point is, you need to be on top of your emotions and not let your ego and excuses keep you from creating the success you desire. We’re going to dive straight in and before we even start with time management and productivity, we need to start by you getting clear on how you get in your own way!!

    I have had enough experience and time to go through my own stuff. I’ve worked for myself for most of my life, and have gone through periods when I let go. I get off track too and let me tell you, the effect slaps you in the face, but I just get back onto what I know works. If I don’t follow these principles, my results are undermined immediately! It’s insane. For me, living my life with a few productivity principles, which you will learn in this book, is like brushing my teeth or taking a shower. They are musts in business! You will see that certain disciplines will give you the biggest return and if you want to live the life of your dreams, they are foundational to achieving this.

    Again, you simply cannot achieve the results you want if you’re not taking responsibility for what is showing up if you don’t apply certain principles and if you believe your own excuses…excuses that stop you from taking the right action.

    So let’s take control by learning how to cut the crap!

    Why you are where you are

    and how to regain control

    As an entrepreneur, you’ll quickly realize that you won’t able to control every single situation that arises. Something less obvious perhaps is that what you can actually control is the way you react to situations. And this is what determines everything!! This is influencing your results more than you know.

    How Your Mindset Affects

    Your Ability to Achieve Success

    Our belief systems about ourselves and our abilities affect our behavior and can be used to predict whether or not we achieve success. We call it our mindset.

    Simply put, a mindset is a frame of mind that is made up of your values and beliefs. It affects (and to some extent, determines) your interpretations and reactions to various events, objects, and situations. The reason your mindset has such a big impact on your everyday life is because it shapes your attitudes (which, in turn, reinforces your mindset).

    Most successful entrepreneurs will tell you that challenges come with the territory. How you feel about those challenges, your analysis of the problems, and finally, the course of action that you decide to take to deal with them largely depends on your attitude. Being able to effectively deal with a challenge definitely gives you an advantage over those who are not able to do so. Your mindset actually gives you the competitive edge that your business needs to succeed!

    What type of mindset do you have?

    There are two main mindsets that our behavioral traits can be categorized into:

    The Fixed Mindset: People with this mindset have a deterministic view of the world. They see their traits (talents and flaws) as fixed and therefore do not see the point in trying to improve or fix them. Instead of seeking to improve themselves, they avoid challenges and constantly worry about how adequate they are while ignoring feedback.

    The Growth Mindset: People with this mindset believe they have more autonomy and have the power to change/develop themselves. Because of this, they embrace challenges and are persistent about the things they care most about. They value constructive criticism and therefore learn from their mistakes.

    Can you guess which mindset is more likely to help you succeed in achieving your entrepreneurial goals? Placing yourself into one of these mindsets may not be so simple (as most of us have a combination of characteristics from each of them), but if you identify more with the fixed mindset, you’re probably not allowing yourself to reach your full potential!

    Here are some examples to illustrate how your mindset can affect your business:

    Responsibility becomes a must: Denying your mistakes or playing the blame game will only prevent you from learning from your errors. Having the right mindset will help you take responsibility for your life and actions; in doing so, you’ll be able to move forward from your mistakes instead of letting your business down by blaming others.

    Negative labels have less of an effect: We’ve all at some point in our lives been stereotyped and put into boxes that we didn’t particularly care for or like. The stereotypes that we’re subjected to actually have a big impact on how we behave. If you’ve ever been told you wouldn’t be a good entrepreneur for some reason or other, then you know how demoralizing that can be.

    Having the right mindset will help you to become more resilient to labels and against all odds. transform into the person you’ve always wanted to be.

    Setbacks become useful experiences: Having the right mindset doesn’t mean you won’t feel disappointed when things don’t go your way. It means being able to analyze what went wrong, evaluate the options for fixing the problem, and to learn from your mistakes. Think of a mistake as one more lesson learned that can help you improve your business in the future.

    Putting in the effort is more pleasant: If you’re not interested in learning anything new, or in improving yourself, putting in the effort to achieve results can be a frustrating process. Did you really decide to become an entrepreneur to work on demotivating projects? Probably not. Having the right mindset will make work an enjoyable process. Your results will definitely reflect how much you not only put into them, but also how much you enjoyed the process!

    Without the right mindset, you’re leaving yourself vulnerable to the CEO disease, a condition that leaves you more interested in self-aggrandizement rather than the success of your company. Having the right mindset will help you see learning as a natural, and in fact, necessary process rather than as a weakness that reveals you don’t already know everything!

    Winston Churchill said, Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm. Successful entrepreneurs understand that challenges are to be expected and create mindsets that help them to maintain their enthusiasm in order to succeed.

    In developing the right mindset, it goes without saying that you need to understand why you have the results you do to be able to change them. I repeated the concept of ‘taking responsibility’ for everything that shows up because at the end of the day, every action you take which gives you those results comes from you and your mindset. You are the one who decides what to do, what not to do, and how to do it, etc. Knowing how you decide what to do or not to do is and how to influence these drivers is key to driving successful behavior.

    There are so many different ways and things you can do to achieve a similar result, and there are a million books out there giving you the strategies, detailed step-by-step instructions on what to do to be more successful. Why do so few people reap the rewards of these books? Half of them probably don’t apply the information given, and the other half could be due to the mindset of the person carrying out those strategies.

    Two people can read the same advice on business strategies, but I’m sure the execution will be very different. Most people focus on the plan, the how . They get stuck in what to do instead of working on the real challenge.

    The challenge is often not what to do or how to do it, but rather, what is the mindset you need to be in and energy required to successfully come up with a plan? Then, what are the questions you need to ask yourself, and finally, what tools do you need to use to get the best outcome?

    We will go into this in detail over the next chapters, but the point is most entrepreneurs and business owners go straight into the how, coming up with a plan in one day when they are unresourceful and hoping this is going to turn everything around, which then would finally be their breakthrough. It isn’t a surprise most entrepreneurs aren’t getting the results they want. And they don’t know why.

    They need to start by looking at their blueprint. Your blueprint is like the map of your brain in terms of thoughts. We have all developed very different beliefs about life, how it works, how things are or should be. It is these beliefs that influence our behavior. We can think of a belief as certainty of a something, a specific thought. A great question you can ask yourself when you have a challenge is, how would Elon Musk or Richard Branson handle this?. What questions would he ask? The idea is that from his mindset, he’d possibly take different actions and ask very different questions.

    Depending on what someone believes, they will focus on different things in life and see things from a certain perspective because we’re all individualistic. What is also true is that it’s not really ‘what’ someone believes that’s most important, it’s whether that belief is aligned with what they want to achieve or not. I’m not here to tell you that your beliefs are wrong either. I’m merely highlighting that your beliefs are influencing your results more than you know.

    To put it simply for now as we will dive deeper into this later, our beliefs influence the thoughts we have every moment of the day. If we believe we can do something, we’ll have different thoughts about what to do compared to believing we couldn’t do something. We might then start to think of something else. So depending on what we believe in general, we think different things. Think about a confident person you know compared to someone less confident. The thoughts they have about themselves, others, and life are very different.

    The thoughts we have give us the emotions we then feel. If we have a good thought, we most likely have feelings associated with good emotions, happiness, confidence, and pride. If we have negative thoughts, we most likely feel stressed, maybe down, depressed, even hopeless. Depending on how we feel, we take very different action, and it is this action that gives us the results we have in our life.

    It would be wise that if we’re not satisfied with the results we’re getting, we need to go back to the source, the foundation, and check, are my beliefs aligned with the results I’m looking to create?

    The first foundation we are going to build in creating a mindset geared for success is to start looking at your current mindset, how it is influencing your results, and how you can change it.

    One of the differences I wanted to make when writing my book was to approach it in such a way that as you’re reading it, you can slowly start to apply some of the foundational concepts right away. Then you can immediately notice a change in what shows up in your life. I don’t want to include heaps of information that gets unused after the book, so I’ve combined basic exercises to do as you read through the book. By the time you’re finished, you’ll have touched on and applied a lot of the concepts already!

    Step One, to start being productive, you need to think like a productive person.

    You cannot have disempowering thoughts, hold lazy beliefs, and expect to get outstanding results. When I spoke about taking responsibility earlier on in the chapter, I’m also very much referring to how you think. This is
