    Harvest Homecoming - Angela Ford

    Dedication

Dedicated to Shaylyn . The most beautiful soul and strongest woman I know. I’m so proud to be your Mom. I love you Boo! To the Moon and Back!

    Excerpt from Harvest Homecoming

The smell of fresh shavings and the aroma of new wood captured Raine’s attention as she fed the horses in the second barn recently constructed. The desire to help in the healing of hearts had motivated her to begin the transformation of the farm to an equestrian ranch. The voice she heard in the near distance made her heart tingle.

I wondered why you didn’t appear when I started cooking bacon. Luke stood at the entrance of the barn with two plates in his hand and wearing that heart-warming smile of his. Under his arm, was a thermos of what she presumed to be the first cup of caffeine she required at sunrise? The ranch, Luke, and bacon–all her pleasures wrapped up in one.

You amaze me. She met him half-way and gratefully relieved him of one of the plates. She held it under her nose, and whispered, I love you.

Luke laughed. I hope you’re talking to me and not the bacon.

Raine raised an eyebrow and confessed her undying love of bacon. Luke tilted his head and made a sad face but Raine reassured him. Don’t worry, you’re a close second. His frown turned into a grin. She laughed, knowing he loved her dry sense of humour. She took a seat on a nearby stack of hay and then wiggled over to make room for Luke.

You know, regular folk sit at the kitchen table. He sat beside her and set his plate on his lap. Opening the thermos, he poured her a cup of coffee.

She thanked him for her sunrise cure and reminded him, We’re not regular folk.

He chuckled. True, we either waste a lot of time, or we go into overdrive quickly.

She liked his description. Either way, we end up here on this haystack eating bacon together.

Luke leaned in for a kiss. There’s the spirit I love.

    Chapter One

On a temperate fall afternoon, Raine Willows reveled in the beauty of the rainbow of colors reflecting in the crystal-clear waters. The once-green trees of summer were now filled with a burst of orange, red and yellow. As if a painting had come to life, the lazy-hazy days of summer gave way to shorter days and an endless view of vibrant colors. The serenity carried Raine along the winding country road. One can get lost in your own imagination out here. She remembered Jack’s words. He’d always be with her. Remember me with a smile, not with sadness. His last words in the letter he’d left her, she’d treasure forever. Raine smiled and remembered the great man, her grandfather. She slowed knowing the next bend in the road would bring her to Willows Lane. The breathtaking, surreal sight had been replaced from the hustle-bustle sights and sounds of city life. One she gladly replaced last spring when her grandfather’s passing brought her home.

Raine loved each season in the Montana Mountains. Each one rare in its own beauty, from the snow-blanketed winter to the awakening blossoms of spring. With autumn on the horizon, the harvest festival of Crystal Creek would surely bring out the best culinary traditions at the outdoor markets, the annual harvest homecoming pancake breakfast and dance, and the official opening of the Healing Hearts Ranch. A dream she shared with her grandfather, unknowingly, until after he’d passed. When her parents were taken from her, she was only ten. Her grandfather welcomed her with open arms and raised her, always with the greatest love and advice. But he never pushed his way of life on her. Even after he passed, he left her with a letter filled with his wise words and the farm. But it wasn’t until her decision to stay and transform the farm into an equestrian ranch, did her Gramps speak again through his best friend, Tom Baker. He’d left strict orders with Tom only to share the plans and the financing with Raine once she’d decided to remain in Crystal Creek.

Raine glanced in her rear-view mirror as she signalled to turn onto Willows Lane. Not that the country road had a stream of traffic like rush hour in the city. She loved it and wouldn’t exchange it for the city life she once thought she loved. It brought her
