The Wise Head
Dr. Pendrant watched with anticipation as his creation hummed to life. It was a large circular archway made of metal resting atop a concrete platform in the center of the room. Every inch of it sprouted wires that trailed to various parts of the room connecting to generators, batteries, monitors, and other peculiar devices of his making. The monitors beeped and whirred as a seemingly infinite stream of data scrolled across the screens. The generators chugged as they fed the archway with power and kept the backup batteries charged.
So far everything was going normally and he waited to see when things became less than normal.
One monitor suddenly flashed red and the stream of data sped up. Dr. Pendrant glanced at another monitor meant to compile and summarize the data and was amazed by how much it was spitting out.
The archway began emitting a high-pitched whir and the batteries in the room began flashing as their power reserves started draining. Concerned he eyed the monitor tracking power usage and was alarmed to see it was much higher than anticipated. The energy demands fluctuated wildly, and he felt his heart flutter as the batteries would drop to low levels before charging again.
Just as he was about to consider retrieving more generators the archway emitted a high-pitched squeal and seemingly every mechanical object in the room screeched in apparent agony.
Abruptly two generators failed, a few of the monitors went dead and the entire apparatus began winding down.
Dr. Pendrant cursed and kicked his desk over angrily, the laptop, globe, and dozens of notebooks that had been resting there went tumbling to the floor. Enraged he snatched a notebook up and began ripping pages out of it.
Ten years, ten years of ridicule, budget cuts, sleepless nights, and for what?!
Tossing the empty notebook aside he grabbed the globe
