ACT ONE
With his left arm firmly wrapped around Culino’s hunched shoulders and his right hand laboriously wading through the water, Adtenatus headed to a large, green waterlily nearly 69 inches long that had drifted all the way to the middle of the arena.
He propped his right elbow on the rim of the waterlily and rested a few seconds, catching his breath. After casting a few worried glances at Culino, Adtenatus repeatedly but gently bumped his forehead against Culino’s—foxheadedness meeting bearheadedness—salt brushing against salt. And he froze. It cannot be, he thought. Sadness filled him, and he suddenly felt as heavy as an anchor. With one guttural heave ho,
Adtenatus clutched the grainy surface and slid his body up onto it, his forehead rotating sensually against Culino’s.
He took in the exhilarating scents of the pretty, white flowers laid out all around him and smiled. His eyes drowned in Culino’s inert eyes and fought to remain open. Lying down and barely moving, he arduously hoisted Culino out of the water, grabbing either side of his large shoulders. They slid along next to him on the slimy surface before he took hold of Culino’s hips, knees, and feet, gliding them in. Gentle waves splashed on Culino’s feet and rolled into Adtenatus’ mouth as he fell asleep, unable to move anymore, their two bodies perfectly aligned.
Adtenatus drifted off into a deep sleep and found himself dreaming of hiking in the undergrowth surrounding Velgan City. Above him, the dense, overhanging branches intermeshed, and the sun cast a zigzagged pattern on the lush ground. He decided to follow it. The aromas, sounds, and freshness of the woods stimulated all of his senses. He had always found the temperature pleasant and the songs of birds—particularly the robins—relaxing. It gave him time to think. Adtenatus stopped next to a cluster of wildflowers and crouched to pluck dandelions, chickweeds, forget-me-nots, and fireweeds, composing a nice bouquet to snack on.
With one hand on the ground to maintain his balance, he noticed a barely perceptible stream of water flowing at grass level. Cupping his free hand, he freshened his face and drank as much as he possibly could, taking in his daily dose of calcium. He was at peace with himself and felt good. Shortly after resuming his walk, one of the dandelions in the bouquet caught his attention. The large round flower puzzled him, and the bright yellow color mesmerized him. He knew the dandelion was bound to turn into a large ball and spread seeds at some point, but he did not know what else to make of it. He hesitated. Not knowing what to do, he blew on the dandelion. Made a wish. And then he ate it, not even caring about the seeds!
Adtenatus straightened his shoulders, looked far in front of him, and smiled while following his vision, his flashy bouquet leading the way. A pleasant while later, looking up, he saw that the path had led him to what looked like the perfect hideout. He carefully placed what was left of his bouquet in his mouth, biting it gently and letting it stick out of either side of his snout. He then leapt, grabbed a branch, and swung up. He was exhilarated as he kicked and saw his legs rise up in front of his face despite the tight garment he was wearing. He hooked his legs over a branch farther up and pulled up quickly. While doing so, he climbed the tree, then another and another and another.
He stopped his ascension and gingerly walked on a thin, long branch. He tried to keep his elbows still at shoulder height as a funambulist would. As Adtenatus reached the end of the branch, he flung himself in the air and landed a bit farther down on rocky ground. Finding himself in front of the narrow entrance of a cave recessed in the face of a cliff, he hopped over a soft and mossy boulder in front of the entrance, lowered his head to pass through a flowery thorn bush, and entered the cave.
It took him only three strides to pace the cramped space; there wasn’t a lot of room inside. To his surprise, he did not have to stay in a half-crouch and could stand perfectly erect. When he craned his neck up, the space above him was endless. He marveled at this and let his left hand linger on the dry wall. Mineral deposits crisscrossed and glittered crookedly on the fluorescent walls. For a brief instant, he felt like seeing his own son smiling! He stared intently and blinked but couldn’t see the
