    Chapter 1

Nomsa wants to get married but….

Having decided to move out of Boniswa’s house, Nomsa went straight to her boyfriend’s apartment without letting him know. The man was not expecting her to move in with him. He did not like the idea of having her in his space on a permanent basis. Nonetheless, he did not protest but he welcomed her. Sometimes she would feel sorry for not accepting Jose’s offer to further her education.

Sipho promised to find her a suitable place for her to rent. Nomsa could not understand his reason for separate living arrangements. She knew that she would have to pay rent and she was not sure if she could afford the rent. She hardly had enough money to pay the required deposit. Living alone could be stressful.

Time flew by and Nomsa was still sharing the apartment with her boyfriend. All available accommodations were either too expensive or the area was crime infested. Finally, Sipho began to accept that he could not chase her out of the flat. He realised that living with her was not such a bad idea after all.

By sharing most of the expenses, he was able to save some of his money. Nomsa was not in a position to save anything. She did not have a bank account because her wages were pitiful. However, Richie had suggested that all employees should have bank accounts so the company could pay wages and salaries into the bank accounts.

One evening as they were watching a movie on the small screen, Sipho proposed marriage to her. There was nothing romantic about his proposal. He simply made a necessary statement. Even though she wanted to become his legal wife, she did not accept his proposal immediately trying to play a cat and mouse game.

She was yet to tell him about her medical condition. She always insisted that he use protection, he thought she did not want to have kids. Truth is, he never looked at her pussy, all he did was push his dick and do a few push-ups, nothing more than that. She realised that they would never have children together. She was okay with no kids unless he starts saying something about kids.

She always feared the moment when he might insist on not using condoms. That could be the end of their relationship. She decided to accept his request provided nothing would change in their relationship. Marriage changes everything.

Sipho said, But how can our love grow if there are no changes.

I am talking about loyalty and dedication, I need you to be faithful to me and I will remain faithful to you till the end of life.

This then means I will have to tell my family that we are getting married.

Yeah, and I will notify my people.

They both knew that before getting married, they would have to go through traditional procedures involving elders. Who was she going to tell about her marriage except her friends? She never once communicated with any member of her family since she left her home. Maybe it was time for her to say something to her mother.

She started thinking about her future. So far, she had been lucky because no sores flared up down there. She hoped and prayed that she remain clean. She never missed taking her medication ever since she met Sipho. She lay in bed wondering why she was so unfortunate as to contract such a disease.

Sipho was lying in bed close to her, his mind filled with uncertainty. He did not regard Nomsa as his ideal woman but he had to settle down at some point in his life. Settling with Nomsa could be a blessing as she proved to be faithful to him.

He realised though that he knew very little about her. What did he really want know. Would he be happy to know how many men had been with her? He had no information about her family. What difference could that make in sustaining the relationship?

However, he had to introduce Nomsa to his family. He wondered how his mother would react since she was very choosy. His sisters might chip in voicing their own opinions about her. Problem is he had a questionable taste with women.

His mind then flowed towards Mumsy. She was one hell of bitch able to turn his world inside out. He could not understand why she was refusing to give him some. He was already spending money on her hoping she would eventually let him but nothing was happening. Nomsa never thought twice before taking off her panty.

He had been chatting with her since they met in her office. Mumsy was capable of saying things that made him laugh or smile. He thought that she was a good person. He had been to her home to repair her laptop, her mother seemed to like him yet he was not comfortable with her.

He wondered then why he proposed marriage to Nomsa. Maybe he appreciated her more as a woman rather than as a companion. He knew that Nomsa was trustworthy. Whereas Mumsy lived in a world of fantasy where nothing was real, he also noted that she had a temper. He had no idea that she was moving around with dangerous people. People who don’t hesitate to take a life were her friends and partners in crime. He was better off with Nomsa.

It was a chilly Saturday morning; the sky was gloomy with ever moving dark grey clouds. Everyone in the José household remained in bed longer than usual. Peace and calm reigned supreme, none of the three had any problems to face and solve except for daily normal challenges life throws around. José was no longer a computer fan as he did previously. It was now Stella’s turn to work on the pc capturing data and updating client information.

He gave his wife his full attention thereby influencing Boniswa to let go of all the unfortunate things that used to make her cry. Her crying days were virtually over and replaced with joy. The woman in her had become much stronger than ever before. The couple was becoming even more prosperous than ever before.

José’s law firm was growing in leaps and bounds. His clientele base was widening and people of all backgrounds sought his legal advice. His days of screaming at people were over. He hardly thought of his sons and whoever else that crossed his path in this life.

All those people and events formed an album, which he stored in his memory. His ailments became even less problematic. Yes, José was ageing but that was just a number. His mental aptitude was still sharp, his reflexes were normal. Most of all, his heart was no longer palpitating at the slightest excitement.

If anyone could be grateful for life, José would be at the top of the list. He had issues, as everyone else had, but his reactions to such issues were not of a hasty nature. He took his time considering and evaluating the circumstances leading to such situations. His foremost concern was not to hurt his wife. He did everything he could to keep her happy and content.

He regarded Boniswa as a gift from God. The thought of God made him realise that he had never set foot in church since the day of his first marriage. He was never present when his kids were baptised claiming that their mother was sleeping around.

Even as he let Benny and Richie run his factory, his conscience was not clear about the issue. One of those boys might not be his. Many times he almost demanded a paternity test but did not. He was young then and his mind was restless. He never gave God a thought then. His obsession with money far outweighed any other thought then. He sought to retrace his steps and seek to go to church.

You know, I think I have to find us a church and start attending services regularly.

Boniswa heard him mention the word ‘church’ and her spirits swelled beyond any limitations. Her heart filled with such joy that she shed a tear. ‘Praise the Lord’ she stated in her mind. Apparently, she had been praying all along for such a miracle.

The inclusion of God in their lives was the best thing that could happen in her life. Her silent prayers were finally coming into fruition. Every act of rebellion or of uncouth spoken words came rushing into her mind and she silently prayed for forgiveness.

No sin is beyond forgiving, her transgressions were normal in any society. People of all creeds practically live for fornication. Adultery is a common sin prevalent in all societies and easily forgiven.

I think that it would be the right thing to do considering that we are together by some miracle from God.

That and the fact that I survived many situations of near death, I am lucky to be alive.

Talk about being lucky, I am lucky that you happened in my life. I shudder to think that had I not met you when I did, I could still be walking the streets or even dead.

José asked, How about going to speak to the preacher today.

That was then the beginning of a new era in their lives. Boniswa got out of bed and took a long bath. Jose went into the shower cubicle and let the water cleanse his body.

Later they drove off in search of a church. Then as if something was directing them, they heard muted sounds coming from the distance. José let the sounds draw him, and they turned the corner and the sounds became even clearer. José parked his car and they both entered the holy building.

Stella remained alone in the house with her mind considering her options for the day. She was no longer afraid to be alone in the house but a sense of boredom crept in. her phone rang then and calmly responded.

    Hello this is Stella speaking.

Nomsa said, Hello my friend, it has been a long time since I heard your voice.

    Are you all right Nomsa?

Yes I am fine, listen we want to visit you sometime today if it is okay with you.

Yes you may come; in fact I would like to see you and your boyfriend.

We will see you after lunch then.

Stella sat in the lounge reading a few pages from a book she took from the book shelve. Then she prepared a meal for herself. She thought of Lisa and wondered if she could invite her over for the day. By the time Lisa arrived, she was presentable and ready to socialise.

Apparently, they ditched the idea of going to the cinema. Lisa was content to be with her, nothing could please her more than being in the presence of Stella. She hugged and kissed her whispering something into her ear.

Stella laughed and she said, My friend is coming over with her boyfriend.

Do I know her, I hope it is not Mumsy, I do not like that woman.

I was not aware that you know Mumsy.

Yeah I know her all right; she is not shy to let everyone know her and her behaviour leaves little to be desired.

Wow, what did she do for you to say that?

That woman is a trouble maker; she can take any man from unsuspecting wives or even girlfriends within a wink of an eye.

Then something must be wrong with those men.

That is why I chose to be a lesbian; men can be easily led astray by women such as Mumsy.

I used to like her but she showed me that she is not worth anything but pain.

As the two women were chatting, Nomsa and her boyfriend arrived. Knocking on the door Nomsa was wondering if Stella was wearing something decent. As Lisa opened the door, she saw the couple standing there the man seemed to be nervous. Nomsa looked into her blue eyes and she somewhat felt intimidated. Lisa’s eyes were piercing but friendly. Looking at both visitors and she invited them into the house. Stepping into the sitting room, the man kept on glancing at Lisa.

Sipho felt more uneasy as he stood inside the house. Something about Lisa dominated their minds. Stella appeared then and she welcomed both of them. Only then could the visitors relax slightly. Sipho was seeing her for the second time but never formerly introduced, he was wondering why Nomsa decided to cage him.

This is Lisa, Lisa this is Nomsa my hometown friend and her boyfriend.

Nomsa introduced Sipho to Stella and Lisa. They shook hands and then they sat on the available armchairs. Stella served them with soft drinks and cookies, which were already on the table. Then they began to chat, Sipho remained quiet for most of the time. Every time he tried saying something, Nomsa would jump in and say something else then he would clam up. Lisa felt sorry for him. A domineering woman like Nomsa could only embarrass him...

I wanted to tell you that we will be getting married.

Oh, that is nice, congratulations my friend.

Lisa asked, And when will that be.

We have not yet decided on the date but it will be soon.

Stella looked at Nomsa and asked, Can I have a word with you.

Stella stood up and Nomsa followed her to the porch. They sat on chairs facing the street. It was a Saturday afternoon and people of all lifestyles were walking up and down the street. Cars, trucks, taxis and all other sorts of transportation drove past. Nomsa did not seem happy or maybe she was apprehensive. She was displaying a knotted brow as if she was questioning Stella’s audacity to call her outside.

Nomsa, we have been friends for a long time, but recently you seem to shut me out. Did I do or say something that hurt you.

No my friend, you have always been good to me. It is just that I have some personal issues and I am stressing over such.

We all have issues so you are not the only one with problems. Anyway I wanted to ask you something if I may.

Nomsa responded, Yes you may ask me.

I know that this is none of my business but I am concerned about you. Are you sure you want this man for a husband.

All I know is that I love him and he asked me to marry him, so I said yes.

"If you feel strongly about marrying him, then please make sure that you both go for blood testing and know your statuses.

Nomsa’s facial expression changed for brief second, she said, yeah we will go for testing.

    Anyway, let’s go back inside.

They found Sipho still sitting in the same position. Lisa was somewhere in the house or outside. When Stella and Nomsa went outside, Lisa also went outside but to the back of the house. Stella found her sitting by the pool.

Why do you leave our visitor alone?

I know it is bad manners but I tried talking to him and he just sat there like a zombie.

Maybe he does not like white people.

I hope he is not the violent type for Nomsa’s sake.

The point is she hardly knows the guy and now she wants to marry him, I am worried for her sake.

Maybe we worry about some things that might not even happen.

Both women then went back into the house. Nomsa and Sipho were talking about something but when Stella and Lisa appeared, they both cut off their discussion.

Stella then asked Lisa to serve their visitors with something to drink. Sipho seemed surprised that Lisa obeyed Stella. The world in which he was living, black people were the servants. His friendship with Mumsy was a starting point for him. She was the first coloured woman to exchange friendly words with him. Thus, he was cautiously entering a new phase of his life.

As he was sitting on that couch, his mind was seeking ways and words of intimacy with Mumsy. He suspected that Mumsy had a thing for him but he was afraid to initiate anything lest she rebuked him. He stole a look at Lisa and he thought that she was arrogant.

However, all those negative thoughts were a fiction of his mind born out of feeling inferior. Somehow, a certain type of women always made him feel uneasy. The feeling did not arise because of their skin colour but because he elevated their statuses. He was suffering from severe complex issues.

Lisa put the tray on the table laden with four glasses and two bottles of beer. As a man, Sipho just sat there expecting one of the women to open the beer bottles. Lisa sat near Stella waiting for Sipho to act, but he seemed frozen as a statue.

Nomsa realised that her boyfriend was afraid to do or touch anything. He was simply waiting for instructions from any of the women. Will you please open the bottles for us? Sipho then opened the beer bottles and poured the liquor into the glasses.

    Nomsa said, thank you.

Stella then asked Nomsa, Tell me, what is happening at the factory.

You know, I have never seen such rude people. Benny and Richie are like monsters, everyone is in fear of being fired.

But is the business growing or not.

The place is damn busy but they are making lots of scrap, the amount of returned goods is increasing daily.

So, that means they are working at a loss.

So long as they pay me, I do not care if they are stupid enough to work at a loss or not.

Lisa asked, What will you do if that factory closes down.

Hopefully I will find another job.

Stella said, Why don’t you take evening classes and complete your matric.

I do not know if I will find time for that.

Lisa looked at Sipho and asked him a direct question, Would you mind if your wife to be goes back to school.

He seemed to swallow something but he responded, No I would appreciate the effort tremendously.

Nomsa asked, Are you sure about that.

Yes, I would want you to grow as a person.

    Thank you my love.

You remember José wanted to sponsor your education and you walked away from us.

Lisa said, My mother can take you on as a student if you do not mind.

That is kind of you. We will have to discuss the implications; I will get back to you.

Would you guys care for another round of beer?

Everyone seemed to hesitate but Nomsa replied, bring them girl.

Nomsa did not mention that she tried attending evening classes but she dropped out because of Mr Bruce. He was constantly demanding sex from her. She never insisted that he should use condoms knowing he might contract herpes. Perhaps wherever he was, he was sick already.

Lisa then brought another two bottles of beer and they resumed the drinking process. Thus, the afternoon turned into evening and Sipho realised he had enough. However, the women carried on emptying their glasses.

When José and Boniswa returned from their search, they found four people celebrating life. Sipho could not believe his eyes when he saw a mixed couple seemingly in love with each other. He knew about such couples but never before had he seen any.

His whole being began to accept that love has no boundaries, yet people seemed to contain it within certain parameters. He realised that love is a universal tool that brings people together irrespective of their background. He knew then he could love any human without constraints.

He had been living in a secluded space on this vast planet, it was therefore time for him to free his shackled soul and widen his horizon. However, his thoughts were about Mumsy. If only he could surpass his fears and act upon his emotions, he would win the battle raging within him. Mumsy was therefore an experiment he could utilise.

José looked at Nomsa and said, Where have you been, your friend here has completed her studies.

Stella interrupted, are you still prepared to sponsor her.

By all means yes, in fact I am going to ask Lisa’s mother to take you on as a student provided you agree.

Sipho said, Mr José I think that would be a great opportunity for Nomsa to grab, everyone is moving on.

Good, leave your contact numbers and I will see to it that you get what you deserve.

That being said, Nomsa wondered if Sipho was trying to get rid of her. She was glad though her tutor would be a woman.

José then walked away to his study. Boniswa remained with them feeling proud in having such a generous husband. She later excused herself and went to bed. The partying spirit began to fade away and Nomsa decided to go home. She told Sipho that it was time to go home.

He reluctantly took his car keys from the table and stood up. Nomsa also followed suit. The hosts walked them to their car. Sipho walked ahead and Nomsa whispered something into Stella’s ear. Then she climbed into the car and off they went. Stella and Lisa went back into the house walking slowly as if they were thinking deeply.

Stella and Lisa closed and locked all the windows and doors. Lisa took two bottles of cider from the fridge and they settled on the couch to watch a movie on the small screen. They sat in silence for a while savouring the taste of the cider. Then suddenly Stella remembered that Nomsa asked her to call her.

    Did you arrive safely?

Yeah, thanks for asking, there is something personal I need to discuss with you but not on the phone.

Look tomorrow is Sunday so we can meet somewhere or here.

Would you mind to come over here?

But I do not know where you live.

I can give you directions; it is really not far from where you live.

Hang on, talk to Lisa about directions.

Stella gave the phone to Lisa. Hello this is Lisa speaking.

Nomsa then proceeded to give her directions as to how they could find her home.

Okay, we will see you tomorrow then.

Lisa asked, What was that all about.

I have no clue; she said that it was a personal issue.

I bet it is about that boyfriend of hers.

I noticed the way he kept on looking at you, do you know him.

    Gosh, are you jealous.

No I am not jealous, I just wondered if you know each other.

And why would I pretend not to know him.

I was just asking, no harm intended.

Stella’s hand was on Lisa’s lap and moving along her soft skin. Lisa put her hand around her shoulders her fingers digging into Stella’s skin.

I cannot wait to hear what she has to say.

Stella said, maybe it is because I asked her why she was marrying someone she hardly knew.

I think that we should respect her decision.

What if she is making a blunder?

What if it is right for her, I mean we all make mistakes so, let her learn from her mistakes.

"I am saying this because a woman came
