    My Best Advice

If you are an Eco brand then I recommend you incorporate the story of the Eco factory you are working with into your marketing. This serves two purposes. You make your Eco factory partner visible so your target customers can verify and believe your Eco claims. Secondly, the factory feels ownership in your brand which bodes well for a long term relationship and motivates them to be true to their Eco claims.

This advice is risky for two reasons. The first is that no factory is perfect and there will always be a skeleton in the closet that could come out on social media. Even if the factory is Oeko Tex certified or FairTrade certified, when you visit the factory, I guarantee you will find situations that don’t meet your expectations. The second reason is that if your competition finds out where you are producing your Eco products, then they will approach the factory to get their production done there too and now the factory can raise prices to the highest bidder. As an Eco brand you need to be intelligently transparent and mitigate these risks.

If you don’t want to share your supply chain and just say, Our factories are X, Y and Z certified, then you might be accused of greenwashing. Certificates are easily bought and they are losing their credibility. Don’t hide the identity of your factories if you want to stand out as confidently Eco. Let your customers verify your Eco claims themselves. If you choose greenwashing then it’s just a matter of time before you get called out. Choose your factories carefully and be transparent. Bite the bullet, incorporate the factory’s story into your story.
