‘I love natural dyeing techniques’
Lisa Reddings, 46, is the founder of Indigowares. She lives in Hertfordshire with her children, Minnie, nine, and Dexter, seven.
THE IDEA
I worked as a freelance textile designer for nearly 20 years, and it left me disillusioned by the fashion industry. In 2016, I started indigo-dyeing, a method of resist-dyeing using the natural organic compound indigo. This led me to Shibori, a traditional Japanese technique of binding, wrapping and compressing cloth to create patterns. The fabric comes out of the dye pot green, oxidises and turns a beautiful blue – a process I found fascinating. I launched Indigowares in July 2018 to celebrate traditional dyeing and printing techniques with a contemporary twist.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT
I ran a stall at arts and craft fairs, and sold on Etsy and through Instagram. In 2019, I started sourcing Kantha-stitched textiles, a traditional Indian way of recycling. A friend in India used my
