Tonight was a rainy night. I decide to make eggplant, black beans, and rice. I’m missing home a lot more than usual. On rainy nights, momma would cook eggplants. She said it was just her way of inviting Oyá into our home. It was my idea to attend grad school in Washington D.C. So here I am, in my apartment, on a cold rainy night; alone.

I fix my plate, then head to the sofa. I joggle my crocket blanket in one hand and my plate in the other; as I turn on the TV. Disappeared is premiering their new episode tonight. Oh goodie, I whisper. I flick to the channel and dig into my food. I burn my tongue on the first bite but that doesn’t stop me. I dig more into my food and become emerge with the TV. I finish my food
