Mother’s Day 2019 marked the 40th anniversary of the Victory Movement and brought to our remembrance all the dedicated soldiers and generals who have battled along with us for the sake of that blood-stained banner we carry; some who have been with for all 40 years, and others who have joined our ranks along the way. All are valuable and important members of this great company of believers – Victory Churches International.

So many stories to tell and so many people to thank! You know who you are. Those faithful ones that have endured with us over the years, moving the ball forward for the sake of precious souls: THANK YOU! No ministry ever exists with only one person or two. One is too small a number for greatness. Our legacy is made up of a great company of people that the Lord drew together to accomplish what He had asked us to do.

We have mentioned some people by name throughout this book to record their loyalty and love as a witness to all who read it. But it is impossible to name everyone. You must know that you are appreciated and loved and never forgotten.

Special thanks to Ron den Otter, Brad Dewar, Douglas Binet, and Juliet Rainy-Brown for all their help in the editing, design, and preparation of this book.

    Introduction

    Past, Present and Future

God used the Apostle John to author the last chapter of the Bible - the book of Revelation, which we all know is a very prophetic book. Why was John considered prophetic? Because he heard what Christ was saying to the church and then told it to the church! Jesus told John, Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this. (Rev 1:19) The past, present, and future.

In this book, we share the things which we have seen, the things which are, and the things which will take place after this. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. (Rev 19:10) Knowing and understanding our past helps us to determine where we want to go in the future. And having a clear plan for the future helps us know what we ought to do in the present – in the here and now.

This book marks the 40th year since we planted the first Victory church in Lethbridge Alberta, Canada in 1979. It has been an incredible journey. In these four decades we, as a movement, have seen some amazing things accomplished, through the leading, empowerment, and correction of the Holy Spirit. We are able to share only a few of the thousands of remarkable stories of God at work – souls saved, lives changed, miracles of healing and deliverance, families and marriages restored, financial miracles, churches planted, children’s homes established, schools opened, television and radio stations launched, and so much more!

After 40 years, not only has much been accomplished, but God has brought together a tremendous team of covenant partners in this vision. Many who are mentioned in this book have worked along side of us for 20, 30, and even 40 years! Some of the finest preachers, pastors, church leaders, and business leaders I have ever known were raised up in Victory.

Moses spent 40 years in Pharaoh’s palace thinking he was a somebody; then 40 years in the wilderness thinking he was a nobody; and the last 40 years he spent realizing God can take nobodies and make somebodies out of them. Many of us have been through this process in the last 40 years.

God has been pruning, preparing and positioning us for what is ahead. We have tasted and seen that the Lord is good, and we look forward to all He has prepared for us in the future. Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those that love Him. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. (1 Cor 2:9-13) Wow! God has prepared good things for those who love Him.

As exciting as our last 40 years have been, I am even more excited about our future! This movement was birthed in revival and I believe it will finish in the greatest revival this world has ever known. Jesus told us to go into all the world and preach the Gospel. Every generation must catch this Great Commission afresh. The harvest is great and the laborers are few. Let’s continue to pray that the Lord of the Harvest continues to thrust forth laborers into the harvest.

May the story of the Victory Movement inspire you to dream bigger dreams in your own life and enlarge your faith for greater exploits in Jesus’ name.

    PART 1

    ZEAL FOR GOD

    Chapter 1 Born in Revival

    The Great Awakening

The 70’s were powerful days of awakening. Days when the manifested presence of God was so strong, miracles happened before our very eyes. These were the days when Kathryn Kuhlman held her crusades in Vancouver. George and I were there in those days and saw the hospital beds rolled in and the wheelchair section filled with hopeful followers. The sick and the lame, the blind, the deaf and the dumb came seeking the Master. They did not leave disappointed. I sobbed with uncontrollable tears rolling down my face as I watched hospital beds being emptied and cripples walking, and the blind receiving their sight again. Jesus was there in a very real way, moving slowly through the crowds of thousands gathered, touching and healing and saving lost souls. It was overwhelming. You did not even have to be in the main area in order to be healed. His presence permeated the whole building. People were healed as they walked through the front doors of the auditorium. Those were days of great awakening and they continued for several years after that. George and I were born-again in the early days of this great awakening and could tell many stories of the miracle working power of Almighty God.

My life was forever changed at that time and gave me a hunger for the Lord that just continued to increase more and more. Like Job I could say, I have heard of You by the hearing of my ear, but now my eye sees You. Job 42:5

We had moved from Vancouver to Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada in 1975, because George belonged to the electrical union and could get work there easily. But God had a far greater plan. Our move to Lethbridge proved to be a turning point in our lives. It was there that George accepted the Lord. The Spirit of the awakening was strong upon us and everywhere we went people got saved, healed or delivered.

It wasn’t long before we started a Bible study in our home and spent all our free time studying the Word of God, praying and ministering to people. We were new Christians and didn’t know much, but we did know the Lord and He was teaching us His Word line upon line and precept upon precept. Day in and day out our home in Coaldale was full of new believers hungry for the Lord. All night prayer meetings were common at our home. Sometimes Saturday night prayer meetings often ran into church services on Sunday mornings. The Spirit of God moved, and we were all filled with the Spirit. I have experienced the wind of the Spirit as it swept over me while alone in prayer, seeking the Master that He would use me for His Glory. A warm wind, a breath from heaven, and then the peace that passes all understanding. Who could deny His existence?

There were many deliverances in those days, more than I have seen in recent years. But there is an end-time awakening coming, we have that promise. People with unclean spirits could not stand in the anointing of God. Strange manifestations were common as people were set free in the Name of Jesus. I recall many such happenings and I believe we will see even greater things before the end.

One lady could not even drive in our driveway because of the blood line that we had prayed around our property but fell on the horn of her car until we came running to see what the commotion was all about. When we reached her car, we opened the door and she fell out. I tell you in all truth, although I could not see them, there were two angels, one on either side of this woman, lifting her up and leading her by the arms to our house. Once inside the door the devils in her began to cry out how they would use this woman for all kinds of evil. A man’s voice spoke out of her as she began to thrash about and foam at the mouth. It was not long before she was set free in Jesus’ name and sat up in her right mind. She received Jesus that day and has been free ever since. Many stories to tell of the delivering power of God and how the anointing of the Lord torments devils.

Many times, people who needed deliverance would run out of church services because they could not stand the presence of God. We learned to expect the anointing and tangible presence of God during times of worship and while the Word was being preached.

Chapter 2 A Time of Stretching

As new believers in the 1970’s Hazel and I were involved with a little Pentecostal church that was beginning to grow. Soon there were close to 80 new converts all in the front pews of the church. The revival that was taking place upset many of the old, staid, religious people. They had difficulty handling the new longhaired, uncouth, unchurched, on-fire-for-the-Lord believers. A rift began to grow between the deacons and the pastors.

Eventually the deacons fired the senior pastor and the associate pastor resigned. The two pastors just went and started another church on the other side of the city, which split the original church right down the middle. Hazel and I went with the pastors because we hardly knew the deacons. Within six months of this new church being started, one of the pastors resigned. Then within 12 months, the second pastor resigned and left town.

I had been saved for less than three years and been through two church splits. It was devastating! Some people who had been involved in those church splits never did go back to another church as far as I know. Hazel and I decided we would do everything in our power to prevent church splits from ever happening – that if we were to ever become church pastors, we would do the opposite to what these pastors did. We would confront the problems and deal with them as quickly as possible.

I was reminded of how David didn’t have a good role model and neither did Samuel. But they learned from negative role models and that’s what we chose to do too. We decided that it was going to make us better, not make us bitter.

In our search for a new church we tried pretty much every church in town, trying to fit in somewhere. But to no avail. Finally, a few of us got together and decided we would be better off just meeting on our own, studying the Bible and praying for one another like we used to do in our home group. It wasn’t long before our house could not contain the people. Meetings were held every night and people would come hungry to be saved, healed, baptized in the Holy Spirit, delivered, or baptized in water in our swimming
