About this ebook

Imagine you are playing your favorite tabletop game, and it's your time to make your character the hero of the story. Your elvish knight or mage orc or human cyborg (or whatever else you can think of) must save the last remaining heir to a magical bloodline. Your character swings their blade back and forth, destroying all those foolish to stand in their way, and they eventually save the prince/princess at the end of the quest. Hooray! Yet, there is another suitor for the prince/princess, and your character must show that only their love is the purest. But, how?

Usually, gamers have to throw together some weird mechanics to explain how characters fall in love, or they simply leave it all up to roleplaying ability. This is dangerous. As a Dungeon Master, you're either fudging up the rules to get what you want, or you're letting the players dictate if they're successful or not. Both paths can end in sorrow. Players will get mad at mechanics that don't make sense, or the players will measure their egos to see who wins the contest.

My book provides a simple, easy to understand system that gives the players a clear answer when it comes to the game of love. With a 1d20 and a few added stats, the characters can make rolls to determine if two characters love each other, how much they love each other, what kind of love it is, and how to contest multiple love relationships. No longer will "Love" be something best left alone, for my system makes it tangible and fair.

    Prologue:

    Once upon a time…

Annabelle Rose was standing rigidly along the street. Her head was turned upwards as she watched the fireworks dazzle the sky with their rainbow colors. Below, their sparkles moved with the slight breeze upon the river nearby, creating a scene almost too beautiful to be true. The booms of their explosions matched her heartbeat, and Annabelle was so nervous she thought she could lift off into space if she weren’t too careful.

Annabelle had left a heart shaped note in Brandon Hillyard’s mailbox. It took her two hours to make it by hand with it’s white laces upon red construction paper. The glittered stars inside surrounded her written request that Brandon meet her by the channel that night. She left invisible kisses inside along with a spray of her perfume, and she hoped it would be enough to bring him to their meeting place. This was the spot they saw one another for the very first time. A special moment frozen for all time.

A dark silhouette slowly walked towards her way. The sound of his footsteps made her smile, and she turned to meet his gaze. Not at first, though. She kept her head down and looked at her own feet. She didn’t’ want to seem too eager. Wait…please, she asked him. And when he did, she lifted her gaze ever so slowly so that she could cherish every little stitch in his clothing before their eyes met. From the leather shoes, up to the tan khakis, along the white buttoned shirt, and then to his face.

But she was stunned. Shocked. It wasn’t Brandon at all. It was Eric Moran, her best friend.

Brandon Hillyard and Annabelle had known each other since they were five years old. She would run away from him in their game of tag, and Brandon would tug on her pigtails and say I got you, Annie! You’re mine now! Brandon always had a dark, seductive attractiveness to him, and even then she knew she would one day marry him. But Brandon was from a rich family. A family that moved all the time. They kept in touch all those years, writing letters back and forth. Finally, this summer, Brandon was back in her hometown. They had been dreaming together about this very moment, and it was finally going to happen. Or so she thought.

Eric Moran, a local boy, had always been at her side through high school. He was her confidant, her bodyguard, and her friend. He had pale blond hair, ocean blue eyes, and a hug that could melt all her problems away. They were Prom dates a few years ago, even though Eric had many offers from much prettier girls. His reason was he didn’t want to leave his best friend behind. And now he was standing here in the exact place where Brandon was supposed to be.

She tensed up, What are you doing here? Brandon’s supposed be here any minute.

He confidently walked up to her and held her shoulders, I know. I know that. And I know he’s your dream guy. Your perfect man. But…I don’t want to lose you to some guy who doesn’t even know what your favorite flower is. Some guy who doesn’t know how hard you laugh when you read something funny in a book. Some guy who doesn’t know how perfect you smell in the morning when you woke up late and didn’t have time to put on perfume and didn’t grab an umbrella when you knew it was raining. I know those things. I know you. Annabelle, He took her hands into his, I love you. I love you. I…love…you.

She didn’t know how to react. This moment had been played in her head over and over and over again, and never did she ever think that Eric would be there. He wasn’t supposed to be there. Brandon was supposed to be there. Not Eric! But then she thought about it. Maybe Eric was supposed to be there. Maybe he was her true love all along, and she was too confused to see it. Maybe he was her other half. Without realizing it, Eric and her were leaning in for a kiss, and that’s when she heard the other footsteps.

She spun around, Brandon?! Brandon showed up, just like she asked him to in her letter. He was almost as surprised as she was. Annie? Why is he here?

I…uh…I don’t know. I didn’t ask him here. I asked you. But now….Uh. Annabelle bit her finger, not sure exactly what to do. Her childhood love was standing before her, but her lovestruck best friend was standing behind her. She looked back and forth at both of their longing eyes, and she couldn’t decide. Her heart was divided in two, and she hoped it would somehow make up its mind. Who did she love more? Brandon, or Eric? Who?
