Chapter 1
I held my gun in both hands against my chest as I hid behind the brick wall of the building next to my partner Detective Ethan Cross. We’d been partners for four months and we were bonding. I knew when he gave me that frown of his; he didn’t like that I wouldn’t change places. I was at the corner and Ethan was on my other side.
No, I mouthed to him. Then I peered around the corner to the alley. We had tracked our perps to an antique shop that was a suspected front for trafficking stolen property.
I had used my special finder powers to locate this building. Oh yeah, I’m part human and part Fae. My powers, unpredictable as they are, come from my unknown Fae sperm donor. The guy knocked up my teenage mother and left her to deal with being a young mother all on her own. Anyway, I’m learning about my emerging powers and have shared none of this with my partner.
My partner, Detective Ethan Cross, was not happy with me. I could tell by his sour expression and agitation that he hated that I was the one who had located the building and perps. I took command as soon as we arrived, calling for backup and telling our fellow cops where I wanted them. Worse, I took the first spot by the wall making it almost impossible for him to observe without being noticed. He growled his displeasure.
I looked at him in frustration. We don’t have time for this,
I whispered at him. Ignoring his glares, I used the tiny microphone piece in my ear. We’re going in. Hold the outside exits.
This time I waited for Ethan to signal he was ready. He nodded his head, and I moved forward into the alley. I couldn’t hear him but I knew Ethan was not far behind me. For someone so big he could move silently. I went to the left side of the door and Ethan went to the right side of the door and leaned against the wall.
I carefully peered into the window to my right then pulled back around quickly. I lifted four fingers to indicate that there were four people inside. Ethan pointed at himself first then at me, indicating that he would go in then I should follow.
What an ass. I couldn’t help but think. It felt like everything moved in slow motion as Ethan reached out to test the doorknob. It wasn’t locked. He twisted it and pushed it open slowly as he checked on the location of the four people inside. Ethan entered.
Put your hands up!
The four men in the room looked stunned, then three of them put their hands up but the fourth decided to make a run for it. I used my earpiece to inform the other cops one of the perps was making his way upstairs to the store’s front entrance. Two more officers entered and helped Ethan secure the three males. Once I knew Ethan had help, I took off going up the stairs.
Do you have eyes on the fourth male?
I asked through heavy breaths as I tackled the stairs.
No one has come out of the front,
the response crackled through my earpiece.
Damn! That meant the perp was either still in the store or had found another exit. I entered the store cautiously. There wasn’t anyone else there that I could see, but there were displays that rose up from different places throughout blocking my view. A counter and display case lined the wall on the right side of the store. I approached slowly to peer over the display. No one was there.
I listened for movement. Sometimes I wished I had enhanced hearing like shifters or vampires. I didn’t, but I did have something else I could use. Moving to where I was half hidden behind a coat rack, I closed my eyes and pulled on my Fae finder powers. I felt a pull to a corner, where there was a door without a doorknob which either led to an office or to a closet. I hadn’t noticed it at first because the door matched the wall panel.
Walking closer to the door, I could hear heavy breathing. Putting my hand out, I felt for vibrations—he was definitely behind that door. What was I going to do to get him out without a shoot out?
I noticed the door move slightly as the perp tried to peer out. Moving back behind the door, I waited for the perp. His gun appeared first, and then his hand and arm. I made my move by using the butt of my gun and hitting the perp’s wrist, knocking the other gun on the floor. Then I pulled the man out of the room he had been hiding in.
Bitch!
Why do men always call strong women bitches? I’ll never understand it. Concentrating on taking down my perp, I kicked out making contact with the back of the man’s legs, causing him to fall down to his knees.
Put your hands on your head right now!
He tried to reach out for his gun but I kicked it further away. I said…put your hands on your head!
The man slowly did as I told him to as Ethan burst through the back door. He took in the scene, looked around the store for other threats, then approached the culprit to put handcuffs on him. He started reading the guy his rights.
You have the right to remain silent.
I was pissed. I had this under control.
Ethan continued reading his rights as he pulled the man up to his feet. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law…
I followed them back downstairs to the basement where the other three perps were handcuffed and being read their rights as well. I left Ethan to finish up since he was ignoring me. I went outside into the alley and paced back and forth trying to calm down. I must have been quite a sight because none of the other officers approached me giving me my space. Ethan was the only one to dare come near. I turned my fury on him.
What the hell were you doing? I had things under control!
Not here. Let’s take a walk.
Ethan motioned for me to lead the way out of the alley.
I stomped past the other officers, who were securing the area from the public while the store was being processed for stolen property. No one said a word while I kept going past Ethan’s car as well. No way would I get inside a cramped space with him while I was this angry.
I think this is far enough,
Ethan said from behind me.
I turned around to put my hands on my hips and waited. I’d already asked my question, he needed to answer it.
I guess you want me to talk first.
Again, I remained silent as I glared at him.
He put up his hands in a motion to signal that he wasn’t a threat. I admit to being a little controlling.
A little?
The truth is, I’m used to working on my own. For six years, I had one partner and when he retired, I worked by myself.
I think there’s something else you’re not saying.
Ethan shrugged. That’s it.
I shook my head and pointed my finger at him. Would you have acted this way if I had been a man?
His eyes went to my breasts. I can’t imagine you as a man.
I snapped my fingers in his face to get his eyes to look into mine. Admit it, you don’t like a woman taking control of a case. You would never have put up such a fit if I was a man.
I don’t have a problem with women.
I took a step closer to him. Just not women who are in charge. You’re one of those men who thinks himself an alpha and that everyone else must follow his orders without question.
A flash of surprise crossed his face before he changed his expression to hide his emotions. What the hell was he hiding? Did I really want to know?
He took a step toward me, bringing us just inches from each other. I don’t mind a woman taking charge in certain situations. In this case, you don’t have the experience that I do.
The only way to get the experience is if I am given the chance,
I stated with frustration.
Perhaps you need more time at a desk and doing background before stepping out in the field,
he offered.
Perhaps I just need a different partner.
With that last statement, I turned my back on him and headed back to the antique shop. This day had turned to shit. I plastered an emotionless expression on my face and got back to my job.

Four Hours Later
I walked into the precinct with Ethan at my heels. We hadn’t spoken to each other except in regards to our case, leaving our fight hanging. My favorite officer, Mark, greeted me with his usual smile.
Hey, Mack and Ethan. I heard you got your man…or men.
I smiled at Mark. He was in his early twenties and always had a smile on his face. It was easy to tease him and he often blushed when I did. It was obvious he had a bit of a crush on me.
We did. I thought your shift ended early today,
I asked walking past the front reception desk where he usually sat. Ethan moved past me and headed to the Captain’s office. I stuck my tongue out at his back. I know—immature—but I had my reasons.
Mark followed after me. I wanted to wait for you to get all the details.
We got them without a single shot being fired.
Mark touched my arm, making me stop to turn and look back at him. He lowered
