About Martin Meadows
Prologue
Richard wins the lottery, and suddenly his life is perfect. He can finally live the life of his dreams. Every problem has been solved, courtesy of a once-in-a-lifetime windfall.
Lucy and Troy get married and live happily ever after. They never fight. They never have to deal with any of the difficulties other couples experience. Marriage has solved it all.
Mary wins a tennis tournament. Just like that, she’s a world-famous sports celebrity, and thousands of athletes around the world look up to her. She never has to train hard to improve her skills again. She’s a sports star now, unable to lose.
Felix decides to change his sedentary lifestyle. A day later he’s jogging down the beach with a sculpted body, his beer gut of ten years having disappeared in a flash.
We’ve been led to believe that personal change happens virtually overnight, provoked by a single event that transforms one’s life in a blink of an eye. If only we could decide to change and reap the instantaneous benefits.
In reality, expecting big, sudden changes usually leads to big disappointments. Barring lucky incidents and unlucky accidents, it’s not an overnight revolution that changes a person’s life. Instead, it’s evolution: a much less attractive concept with almost imperceptible short-term results that lead to hard-to-believe long-term outcomes.
It’s only fitting that the word revolution
comes from the Latin word revolvere,
which means turn, roll back.
Those who expect a revolution in their lives end up right where they started, disappointed in the evil, merciless world that placed so many obstacles on their way to a better life.
I decided to write Everyday Evolution to share with you some practical perspectives on how you can embrace a process-oriented approach in life and avoid this disappointment. By focusing on the slow but steady everyday process, you’ll have an easier time working on your goals than if you were to think of self-improvement as a series of events.
In my books, I like to use the words Prologue
and Epilogue
instead of the more common non-fiction book words Introduction
and Afterword
because they hint that there’s a story hidden between the pages.
Just like the hero of a good story develops their character throughout the pages, so do we grow in this successive fashion. A story in which a character becomes perfect on the second page of the book wouldn’t even be a story, would it? In the same vein, big changes need to gradually grow into such—starting from the tiniest seeds.
Care to learn more? Let’s start the story.
Chapter 1: When Dreaming Is Dangerous
Jasmine is tired of her mediocre, unexciting life. She lives in a city with endless opportunities, a place that never sleeps, goading its residents to be more, have more, and do more. Yet, there she is, stuck in a dead-end job, shuffling papers in a windowless office, hoping for an unlikely promotion and a small raise so she can go on a short vacation once a year.
Where did her life go wrong? What about her dreams of living in a cozy lakeside house, writing romance novels for a living? Everybody tells her to be grateful for what she has. Dreams are for kids; adults need to make do, they say.
But she refuses to accept this as fact. Her great-grandparents didn’t come to America for her to barely get by. She shouldn’t squander her opportunities. It’s time for a big change, she decides. No more selling herself short. She’s capable of so much more, and it’s time to prove it.
She starts by telling her family and friends that
