CHAPTER 1
JUST A VISIT
Who could have ever thought that something which could be termed Just a visit
would end up attracting visitors from all over the globes? On the 23 of June 2018, Chanin Wibunrungrueang, Phanumat Saengdi, Duanghet Phromthep, Somphong Chaiwoung, Mongklon Bunpiam, Nathawart Thakhamsong, Ekkarat Wongsukdan, Adun Sam-on, Prachak Sutham, Phiphat Phothi, Phonchai Khanmluang, Phiraphet Somphiangchai and Ekkaphon Chanthawong, all members of local youths football team – The wild Boars, all decided to pay an interesting visit to Tham luang Nang Non cave in Mae Sai Province, Thailand.
It was an exciting Saturday for the group, a member of the group turned plus one, and they were also welcoming a new member to the group, so the joy for them was something unimaginable, spirits were high. So in the spirit of the fun Saturday the Wild Boars and their assistant Coach Ekkaphon Chantawong decided to visit their favorite spot after the days practice. The excitement was completely written all over their faces as they ride through the rice paddies with their bicycles. As they headed towards the forested hills which had birds hop from one tree to another, trees bending from one direction of the wind to another, they saw these trees bend almost to the height of their heads and eventually return back to its rightful position. Waters were flowing towards a particular direction and the birds of the heavens could not just stop singing out to the happiness of anyone who cares to listen, feel and enjoy the beauty in the world. Interestingly, all of these added more color to the joy which the boys had. The atmosphere was so beautiful and lovely that they could not resist, but to immediately tap into the beauty and awesome power of nature to boost their morale regarding the adventure which they were about to embark on.
Looking forward a little is the 4th biggest mountain cave in Thailand, called Tham luang cave, which had a shape of a sleeping lady when viewed from aerial angle, with many deep recesses, narrow passages and tunnels winding under hundreds of meters of limestone strata. Faces beamed with smiles and a deep breath of oh finally we have gotten to our destination
gushed out from each one of them as they slowly slide their legs to the ground to stash their bicycles’ at the entrance of the cave. Still looking around the environment before they made their entrance, they could still smell the beauty of the mountainous flowers, trees, birds and they immediately knew that this was just the right spot to spend their day.
The cave has always being a regular spot for celebration and appreciation of life. In their visit to Tham Luang, sometimes they venture deep into the cave as far as 5km for initiation rites, were they would write the names of new team members on the cave. On this particular day, they went into the cave with just their torch light. They didn’t need much, after all, they were only planning to be there for just an hour. With so much excitement, they kept on exploring from one point of the cave to another, flashing torch light on dark spot and picking up some unfamiliar rocks found around. The adventure keeps getting exciting by the second as they kept moving with no care in the world. Surprisingly, they failed to realize that in the past few days, it has been raining heavily, so there could be a possibility that all the entire water in Mae Sai, that resulted from the rain fall could all be running down to Tham Luang cave. But who cares about stuffs like this when having a good time, especially when it appears, like the time of your life. These young guys were having their moments, so they did not give much consideration to the weather and all the signs placed at the entrance of the cave. All they were concerned about was the simple fact that they are alive and a friend and colleague is having a major celebration. As they kept moving, faces lighted up with wow similes, as they were unable to believe certain creatures that they saw. At a point flashing torch light at dark sport almost became the most interesting part of the adventure, as they could discover rocks that are amazing and lovely. Moving on, in this interesting adventure, was the pattaya Beach, a dry point in the cave. This spot almost got them blown away with smile. I mean, who will not like to play in a dry beach with his friends? So they made sure that they had an amazing time at the pattaya Beach before proceeding in their adventure.
Unfortunately they were caught off-guard by a flash flood and this particular incidence changed the entire story for the wild Boars. They never saw these coming, neither did they anticipate for it, and the most annoying aspect of it all is that their fun has been cut short. So what are the boys going to do at this point in time, because they have not had an experience of this nature before in their entire life, No preparation, No idea, No experience, No material and the part that saddens the most is that their parents do not have a single idea regarding their whereabouts, except for the simple fact their boys went out with their coach for practice. At a flash what one could describe as the happiest moment for these boys, automatically changed to be the saddest for them, how ironic life is.
Since this is the current reality facing the boys, what are they supposed to do? But the interesting thing about life is that we do not know how strong we are until been strong then happens to be the only choice we are left with; that is to say that been strong no longer becomes a choice, but a must. That point one is caught up between the devil and the deep blue sea, between life and death, between jumping off a vehicle and being smashed and grinded to powder by a fast moving train. At this point it will surprise you the way the brain that has failed to function for the past few days will automatically at a flash become more active than a smart phone, and the arteries and veins that has been so relaxed will immediately dive into serious action, than a well-trained military officer. This was exactly the situation the boys found themselves, so they had no choice but to act fast, because life is at great stake. So what did the boys do? Determined to survive, the group used rocks to dig 5m deeper in order to create a cavern where they could huddle together and keep warm. The cavern now became a safe haven for the boys which provided them a platform against the flood, the cavern was elevated above, with moisture dripping from the cave walls. Then, they had to come together to huddle themselves in order to keep warm. The cavern was completely dark so there was no way for them to figure out further possible way out, since their only source of light been the torch was gradually going off. So they had to prudently utilize the torch very well so that they will be able to use it in sourcing for the most basic things, such as water. Coach Ake played a very key role. Realizing that these boys are way young and they are very tense, stressed and afraid, what he did was to get them engaged in a drill in order to put them at ease. Although at the onset his effort almost appeared unproductive as the boys were still fidgeting in great fear, wondering if they will ever survive the ugly ordeal. They thought of their parents at home, how they will be feeling about their unknown whereabouts, and as
