About this ebook

The book — Pearls of wisdom presents a historical and panoramic view of human civilization. It is a compilation of quotes /sayings of prophets, philosophers, thinkers, poets, emperors, politicians and business tycoons; on various aspects of human lives; be it religions, ethics, morals, business, principles of governance, evolution of science and technology, besides quotes on Nature, Earth, Soul, Love, Beauty, Human Minds, Human Hearts, and Eyes. There are quotes about the qualities of animals; like Dog, Horse, Lion and their influence on human lives. There are in all 26 sections chapters as reflected in the Index.

On perusal of these quotes following facts emerge:

1) The human race loves to live in peace. The religions, though was intended to achieve peace in society, have unfortunately been one of the main reasons for wars, crimes, destruction, and genocides because of the intolerance among the believers since faith is blind. Rationality had been and is the first casualty.

2) All the religions are the gifts of the East. The gifts of the west are communism and Atheism.

3) Things once considered as blasphemies have come to be accepted as truth. The example of Galileo Galilei is remarkable.

5)The governing principles have been evolutionary. There can never be a uniformed pattern of governance as peoples differ in their thinking and beliefs for that reasons there have been clashes of civilization down the ages.

6)The exploration of our solar systems is the result of endless and insatiable urge in man to unravel nature. The achievements of science and technology belong to the whole of humanity.

I have tried to present a snapshot profile of March of human civilization through the voices of the great minds ever walked on mother earth.

This compilation will serve as ready reckoner

    QUOTES FROM BHAGWAD GITA

•We are kept from our goal, not by obstacles, but by a clear path to a lesser goal.

It is better to perform one’s own duties imperfectly than to master the duties of another.

No one should abandon duties because he sees defects in them. Every action, every activity, is surrounded by defects as a fire is surrounded by smoke.

Reshape yourself through the power of your will…

It is better to strive in one’s own dharma than to succeed in the dharma of another. Nothing is ever lost in following one’s own dharma.

Abandon all attachment to the results of action and attain supreme peace.

When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering, like the flame of a lamp in a windless place.

Strive to still your thoughts. Make your mind one-pointed in meditation. The mind is restless and difficult to restrain, but it is subdued by practice.

When a person is devoted to something with complete faith, I unify his faith in that. Then, when his faith his completely unified, he gains the object of his devotion.

Strive constantly to serve the welfare of the world; by devotion to selfless work one attains the supreme goal of life. Do your work with the welfare of others always in mind.

As the heat of a fire reduces wood to ashes, the fire of knowledge burns to ashes all karma.

Free from anger and selfish desire, unified in mind, those who follow the path of yoga and realize the Self are established forever in that supreme state.

No one who does good work will ever come to a bad end, either here or in the world to come.

A gift is pure when it is given from the heart to the right person at the right time and at the right place, and when we expect nothing in return.

It is Nature that causes all movement. Deluded by the ego, the fool harbors the perception that says I did it.

One has to learn tolerance in the face of dualities such as happiness and distress, or cold and warmth, and by tolerating such dualities become free from anxieties regarding gain and loss.

Ignorance is the cause of sinful life, and sinful life is the cause of one’s dragging on in material existence.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

A man who sees action in inaction and inaction in action has understanding among men and discipline in all action he performs.

Sever the ignorant doubt in your heart with the sword of self-knowledge. Observe your discipline. Arise.

The power of God is with you at all times; through the activities of mind, senses, breathing, and emotions; and is constantly doing all the work using you as a mere instrument.

There are three gates to this self-destructive hell – lust, anger, and greed. Renounce these three.

The offering of wisdom is better than any material offering.

You have the right to work, but never to the fruit of work. You should never engage in action for the sake of reward, nor should you long for inaction.

Those who are motivated only by desire for the fruits of action are miserable, for they are constantly anxious about the results of what they do.

Actions do not cling to me because I’m not attached to their results. Those who understand this and practice it live in freedom.

The wise work for the welfare of the world, without thought for themselves.

Pleasures conceived in the world of the senses have a beginning and an end and give birth to misery.

Even if you were the most sinful of sinners, you could cross beyond all sin by the raft of spiritual wisdom.

Calmness, gentleness, silence, self-restraint, and purity: these are the disciplines of the mind.

Better indeed is knowledge than mechanical practice. Better than knowledge is meditation.

If you want to see the brave, look to those who can return love for hatred. If yu want to see heroic, look to those who can forgive.

Faith means unflinching trust in something sublime.

The immature think that ‘knowledge’ and ‘action’ are different, but wise them as the same.

When you move amidst the world of sense, free from attachment and aversion alike, there comes the peace in which all sorrows end, and you live in the wisdom of the Self.

Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.

He alone sees truly who sees the Lord the same in every creature… seeing the same Lord everywhere, he does not harm himself or others.

Why do you worry unnecessarily? Whom do you fear? Who can kill you? The soul is neither born nor dies.

Whatever happened was good, what’s happening, it’s going well, whatever will happen, will also be good. You need not have any regrets from the past. Do not worry for the future. Live in the present.

What have you lost that you cry for? What did you bring, that you have lost? What did you create that was destroyed? What you have taken has been from here, what you gave has been given here. What belongs to you today belonged to someone yesterday and will be someone else’s tomorrow. Change is the law of the universe.

The meaning of Karma is in the intention. The intention behind action is what matters.

Better indeed is knowledge than mechanical practice. Better than knowledge is meditation.

Fear not what is not real, never was and never will be. What is real, always was and cannot be destroyed.

Only when a person responds to the joys and sorrows of others as if they were his own, he has attained the highest state of spiritual union.

    QUOTES FROM THE TORAH

•If I am not for myself who will be for me? Yet, if I am for myself only, what am I? And if not now, when?

Say little and do much, and receive all men with a cheerful face.

Initiate a greeting to everyone, and it is better to be a tail to a lion than a head of a fox.

Don’t try to appease your friend when he is angry, or try to comfort him when the dead lie before him. Do not try to see your friend in the time of his disgrace.

We can not explain either the suffering of the righteous or the happiness of the wicked.

Be careful of politicians. They are your friends when it is to their advantage, but abandon you in your time of need.

The more flesh you have, the more the worms will eat. Let the honor of your friend be as important to you as your own. Don’t get angry easily, and repent one day before you die.

The day is short, the job hard, and the workers lazy. You don’t have to finish your tasks on Earth, but you can’t abandon them, either.

What is wealth? Being happy with what you have.

Do not rejoice when your enemies fall, or let your heart feel joy when they stumble, lest the Lord see and turn His displeasure to you.

Do not look at the flask, but what is inside it. There is a fancy bottle with bad wine in it.

According to the effort is the reward.

Do not be scornful of anyone, or doubt that anything can happen, for there is no person without his hour, no thing without its place.

When you pray, don’t follow a set routine or text, but rather beseech for mercy and pity, as it is written, For the Lord is gracious merciful, slow to anger, and great in love.

I returned and saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, yet they are all the same when a time of disaster falls upon them.

Like birds caught in the snare, like fish in a trap, are we when bad luck falls upon us.

Even though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will not fear evil for You are with me.

The clear and apparent road is the road of truth and charity.

Save yourself from disloyalty of a friend and the usurpation(violation/invasion) of an enemy.

Those who don’t protect freedom are soon imprisoned by slavery.

The person who doesn’t respect himself, then he should not expect to be respected by others.

The protectors of injustices against freedom become imprisoned with slavery.

When wisdom becomes complete then speech is reduced.

The counsel of the elderly is more extensive than the show of strength of the young.

There is no greater truth than death and there is no greater lie than to raise ones hopes.

Knowledge is better than wealth, because knowledge protects you while you protect wealth.

When a road is open towards peace from freedom then it is foolish to stay in fear and bondage.

When speech becomes less, then man usually speaks the truth.

The best speech is that which is backed by sincere action.

Do not put your trust in fake promises because it is investment of foolish.

A friend cannot be considered a friend unless he is tested on three occasions: in time of need, behind your back, and after your death.

An alert and learned man will take advice from any event.

Associating with the wise and the knowledgeable people adds to the prestige of a person.

Fear only the will of God and you will have no cause to fear anyone else.

He who has a thousand friends has not a friend to spare, while he who has one enemy will meet him everywhere.

The best companion and helper is admirable morals.

There is no capital more useful than intellect and wisdom, and there is no indigence more injurious than ignorance and unawareness.

There is no knowledge and science like pondering and thought; and there is no prosperity and advancement like knowledge and science.

There are so many highly esteemed ones who became miserable and humiliated just because of their bad temper and morals; and humble people who have attained eminence and the highest honors because of good temper and morals.

There are three signs of a knowledgeable person: knowledge, forbearance and silence.

The weakest man is the one who is able to correct his moral defects, but doesn’t take action.

Two things cause people to be destroyed: fear of poverty and seeking superiority through pride.

When wisdom reaches the acme of perfection, it will suppress the vicious instincts and injurious desires.

There is no wealth like knowledge, no poverty like ignorance.

•We are born of woman, we are conceived in the womb of woman, we are engaged and married to woman. We make friendship with woman and the lineage continued because of woman. When one woman dies, we take another one, we are bound with the world through woman. Why should we talk ill of her, who gives birth to kings? The woman is born from woman; there is none without her. Only the One True Lord is without woman
