    Remembering Atticus

    Atticus made six.

He’d been her heart. Now he was just a number.

    Number six.

The sixth dead cat. The pattern was the same. First the cat would disappear and then a few days later show up dead—with a broken neck. They were vicious, seemingly random attacks that had left the police and Animal Services stumped. Even before the death of Atticus, Jeanette Hadley knew she had to do something. Not only was someone killing cats, but they were killing her business as well. At almost eighteen, Jeanette prided herself on having the most successful cat sitting service in the area. She made cats her specialty because they needed less care than dogs. There were no early morning walks to contend with. She didn’t mind cleaning litter boxes and playing with toys in the shape of stuffed rodents. Cats were loners and so was she. She wasn’t popular in school and didn’t care. She was one of the few female students who never dreamed of catching the eye of the high school football star or becoming prom queen.

Most of the other students at Rockwell High worked at local fast food places or for retail giants, but Jeanette didn’t like people enough to be in a service oriented industry. She liked being independent and choosy. That was one of her success secrets. Being exclusive. She made potential clients fill out a questionnaire and conducted an interview and within six months she was in demand. In addition, she had a special affinity with cats and on several occasions helped their caretakers (she didn’t believe anyone ever ‘owned’ a cat) with different problems. She’d stopped one cat from peeing on the sheets in the caretaker’s master bedroom; another from using the caretaker’s suede couch as a scratching post. Her selected group of clients was always pleased with her services. Cat sitting afforded Jeanette the income she desperately needed to help her grandparents.
