Chapter One

Multiple claps of thunder erupted from outside Kim's home. A severe thunderstorm with a tremendous amount of heavy rain and dark clouds had suddenly moved in and filled the streets of Ashburn, Georgia. Kim was brutally awakened by the gusty wind beating the relentless rain against her window and vinyl sided mobile home.

It was 3:15 a.m. when she glanced at the white circular glow that surrounded the dark clock on her glossy, oak dresser. Kim breathed in deeply and exhaled as some of her built up tension went away. However, she was still overwhelmed with so many of life’s problems and she had yet come up with a solution to deal with any of them.

She kicked the comforter off of her body and onto the floor, feeling helpless and annoyed. While still lying in bed and starring at the ceiling, she started to recap her life. She thought about how she grew up as a child, with her three sisters and one brother. Things had been so much easier then. Now she contemplated how hard it was to be a single parent and how she had to bust her ass working twelve hours a day to make ends meet. After all the bills were paid, she might have seventy-five to a hundred dollars for herself, out of nine hundred and sixty dollars every two weeks.

No one would guess in a million years that a 5'3, 120 pound woman like herself, would work on the Universal Forester Crew as a saw operator. She was the most skilled worker at her job, out doing her male counter parts.

Alexis was Kim's only child, who she called her miracle baby. She tried many times to conceive, but couldn't. Just when she had decided to give up she finally got pregnant with Alexis. So it was quite natural that Kim was over protective. Alexis was fifteen years old and was a freshman in high school. However at the moment, she was enjoying her summer vacation.

Come on now Rick! I thought you said we would be off? Kim cried.

Yes I did say that and I apologize. But I just got a call for a new order like ten minutes ago and you are the best worker I got, he replied.

Okay, okay Rick. I'll be here tomorrow early.

Thank you Kim, Rick said politely.

Kim drove off and soon pulled up in Shawn's yard in her 2005, Toyota Camry. Alexis, Shawn and her four kids were on the patio under the umbrella table away from the sun and playing Rummy. Hey Mommy! Alexis yelled.
