Part One:
The Parrot of Jane Ever
One
"Detective Steele, I am in desperate need of your help. My parrot has disappeared and it has been talking about someone getting murdered. I’m scared. Please help me."
I couldn’t resist something so bizarre. I replied to the email immediately,
"Tell me more."
I leaned back in my chair and shut my eyes to think. Almost at once, the doorbell rang. The bell hardy ever rang; as directed by the sign on the door, clients generally knocked or, ignoring social norms, barged in without warning. It depended on the person and how highly they considered themselves. But, there was one person who always rang the doorbell, my best friend, Loretta Jones.
I didn't bother opening my eyes as I called out.
Lorey, you can come in.
There was a squeal of laughter, then the sound of the door opening and clicking shut. Where are you, Flick?
I'm in the back.
The door which separated my office from the rest of the apartment opened and Loretta came in.
I opened my eyes and saw that Loretta was dressed in her usual color palette of lavender and black. Black denim jeans, a lavender shirt, and a lavender suit jacket. Her curly black hair was dyed lavender at the ends. When it was left loose, her hair looked like a dandelion with inverted colors.
It's so cool!
Lory grinned, I was walking down the street and I saw your face in a newspaper! You've done it, you're famous!
I blushed, "I'm hardly famous, I just got some recognition." Nevertheless, I must admit, getting any sort of attention was pleasing.
Until recently, the Steele Detective Agency, my agency, was almost entirely unknown to the public. That had changed after the case of the Bloody Butterfly, a long lost ring worth millions.
You are way too modest. The way Mrs. Hestya,
My landlady, goes on about it, you could be the greatest thing since Soap Operas.
Loretta continued her rant as I turned back to the computer.
The computer dinged. It was another message from my new client.
Oh, and another thing. Someone had left this for you. They were at your mailbox downstairs.
Lorey pulled a bouquet of flowers from her bag and put them on the table. I guess someone really likes you.
She winked at me.
