    In Memoriam

I’m sad to announce that both Max and Jenny died before this book was published. I miss them every day and hope that all pet owners will cherish theirs. I miss you Max and Jenny!

    NOTE FROM AUTHOR:

M ax and Jenny are my guinea pigs. He’s a cutie, but let’s face it, he’s not the most exciting pet in the world. He mostly eats, sleeps, and poops. I was told by other guinea pig owners that he would make all kinds of noises. He doesn’t. I never heard him make any sounds except a sort of purring when I petted him, but that’s about it…until I got him a friend.

Jenny is her name but I call her Hurricane. She’s a wild one, nothing like Max, who’s rather boring. Or so I thought! Little did I know that Max has a secret life, and he’s quite an extraordinary little pig! So if you think your pets are boring, you might want to follow them late at night and see if they might be leading a double life as well. Anyway, here’s Max and Jenny’s story!

    CHAPTER 1

    Damsel in Distress

H i, my name is Max. I’m a guinea pig and, I think, a pretty nice guy. I’m also a detective. No, really! I’ve solved half of my cases. Of course, I’ve only had four. But I’m getting better! At least, Mom has stopped nagging at me to go into accounting.

Last month was my best case ever because that’s when I met Fiona! It was the end of spring, in April, a dark and stormy night. Yeah, I know that sounds like a cliché, but it was dark and there was plenty of thunder and lightning. It was so humid that my fur stuck to my chair when I got up to look out the window.

I was about to close up the office when there was a faint knock on the door. I pushed aside the curtain and saw the most beautiful face ever. She was a short hair breed, white with a touch of brown and black, and clear black eyes.

She let out a small ‘wheek’ when she saw me.

Hello, are you Detective Max? she said. Her voice was like silk. My heart beat faster.

    I nodded.

Let me introduce myself, she purred. "I’m Fiona Jennifer Cavy, president and owner of the world’s best guinea pig
