DEDICATION
This one's for Skelly, who gave me loads of brilliant ideas for who to dedicate this story to. None of them made any sense, but all of them were hilarious.

Chapter One
I knew I wanted to be a private investigator was when I was fifteen. I was at a sleep-over at my best friend’s house and we’d taken advantage of her parents being out for the night to raid their rather extensive whiskey collection. Cradling glasses of alcohol that neither of us really enjoyed, we surfed the TV channels until we stumbled upon a showing of Vertigo. Whilst my friend giggled and blushed over James Stewart, I fantasised about running away with glorious Kim Novak. And at fifteen, muddled with whiskey and just discovering my sexuality, it seemed perfectly logical that to get a Kim Novak, I needed to be a James Stewart.
No profession seemed more macho to me than private investigator and that was the initial draw. Over a decade later, I’d put to bed my desire to prove my worth in a man’s field. I’d learnt that being a PI wasn’t about being masculine. It was about patience, persistence, and perseverance, and those were qualities that didn’t require a penis. In fact, sometimes I thought having a penis might be more hindrance than help.
The other thing that being a PI required was a good filing system. I’d been working back-to-back cases for about a month now, which was great for my bank balance but terrible for my office. I’d planned to spend the day sorting through invoices, case notes, and emails. But it was a drizzly spring morning and the gloom outside made my cramped office seem more claustrophobic than usual. So instead I was curled up on the sofa with a mug of tea, watching Vertigo for maybe the hundredth time and once again fantasising about running away with Kim Novak.
I was tempted to ignore the phone when it started ringing. It wouldn’t be Ayla – she never used the home phone because she couldn’t remember the number – and I didn’t really want to talk to anyone else. But it might be a potential client and, unsociable or not, I couldn’t afford to turn work down. Trying not to sound as grumpy as I felt, I answered. Ryan Investigations. How can I help?
A woman answered, hesitant and almost furtive. I…do you perhaps have time to see me today? I can pay for a consultation.
Her phrasing irritated me. As if paying for a consultation was optional. I rose and took the phone through to the office, searching for a scrap of paper amidst the filing pile. I could make time this afternoon,
I said. Can I take your name, please?
Mrs. Joyce Bonner. It’s rather urgent.
I paused,
