Sometimes, if you're a really good boy all year, Santa will reward you richly. Other times I figure Santa just fucks up. I hadn't been a good boy all year by anyone's standards, but I'd still won five hundred bucks on a scratch card on Christmas Eve. So I guess Santa hadn't had time to check his list twice.

Christmas Eve in Sylvester's is a pretty happy time. The barmaids wear Santa hats and Sylvester hangs mistletoe over the bar, like there's anyone worth kissing except the barmaids, who never go for it. He'd even sprung for a real tree this year, although the damn thing looked like it should've been chopped for firewood several Christmasses ago. It was shedding needles at a depressing rate, and the fairy at the top looked kinda drunk and slutty.

Or maybe that was my fifth whiskey talking. So whatever. Manically upbeat Christmas music pounded through the speakers and everyone looked a little cheerier than usual. Given that Sylvester's is the place you come when even the disreputable bars kick you out, that counted for a lot.
